Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I'm looking at Rics and found a 1975 JetGlo 4001 at Rich Tone, but I can't figure out what is going on with the finish. https://richtonemusic.co.uk/rickenbacker-4001-1975-jetglo-hard-case-2nd-hand/?mc_cid=644ee1e565 Is this just a matter that some fool tried to do a roadworn or relic job on the bass, or could it have possibly aged like this naturally? If this was deliberately done, why would anyone do that? Quote
BlueMoon Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Difficult to say for sure why anybody would choose to do such a thing. To me it doesn’t look like natural wear, but I could be wrong. The headstock, in particular, looks like a relic attempt……….and not a good one at that. I’ve never had a Ric wear thin in those places. Shame. 1 Quote
SurroundedByManatees Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 (edited) I think it had been refinished over the original lacquer, and that it had been sanded down to the original finish at a later point. Edited December 6, 2024 by SurroundedByManatees 1 Quote
pst62 Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Is it even a real Ric? That pickguard looks a bit too close to the binding at the arse end, could be the angle I suppose. 1 Quote
spongebob Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Built February 1975. I’ve never a finish like that……fully agree with the bodged refin or butchered relic job. Either way, I wouldn’t say it was worth that…..both of my old 4001’s (sold some years ago) needed refretting, so another potential cost. Quote
Woodinblack Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I was going to say that it was worth it if it was around £1000 so you could do it up, then clicked the link. No! Quote
