lonestar
I've been listening to lot's of stuff with this guy playing. http://www.bonnieraitt.com/bio_hutch.php My favourite bass player, for this week any way. Anyone know any more about him? chris_b
He has played with Bonniw Raitt since 1982 and is on the early Keb Mo records and on quite a few Delbert Mclinton records.
mike257
Also on the Ryan Adams album 'Love Is Hell', alongside a bunch of Bonnie Raitt regulars, I think. Ace player, massive CV!!
wateroftyne
He's on a David Crosby live CD that I have, 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now', and he's great. Lovely tone, fab feel.
Pete Academy
I saw hi playing with Bonnie Raitt many years ago. He was great, but had a load of basses, and insisted on using a different one for every other song. To be honest, they all sounded the same and he took ages to change over. The Funk
I've always been partial to his work with Dave Starsky and Huggy Bear.
jacko
ignoring the tosser replies, Hutch is a brilliant player. As a long time Bonnie raitt fan I've got to hear how huthch's playing has developed over the years. Live, he has a perfect tone and despite what was said above, every bass change resulted in a different tone that ws just right for the song. His fretless playing is sublime. I've seen him play live a few times but watch a Bonnie Raitt video if you don't believe me. He goes from a Modulus to a Washburn electro-acoustic to a fretless or whatever because he's responding to the song and its needs for a different texture. The result is noticeable and complimentary. yorks5stringer
Got to agree, HH is a top Bassist, check out his fretless playing on "I can't make you love me" with Bonnie. I guess when Pete Academy is playing with Nearly Dan, he doesn't have to worry about changing between Basses: for me it's the more the merrier! Pete Academy
Actually Jacko, I never criticised his playing. In my opinion the bass changeovers took a little too long and made neglible difference to my ears. I would be the first to put him up there with the bass greats. I've nothing against people taking loads of basses to gigs. Personally I'm happy with the one bass I use. So there.

But in a live gig situation, that isn't always the case.

It sounded like he did it because he could, and the only difference I noticed was when he switched between fretted and fretless. Bonnie Raitt made a lot of changes too but I guess that was due to various open tunings. I'm a one bass a night man as I have to carry all my gear myself, but if 10 basses helps you "get your sound" why not!

I wonder what people would be saying if the drummer had changed his kit 10 times to perfectly suit each song.
jacko
That's a bit harsh, Jacko.
I was referring to the starsky and hutch reply by 'the funk' that added nothing at all to the discussion. have you ever sat in a meeting / conversation where there's intelligent discourse about whatever and the office clown keeps throwing in stupid comments that have nothing to do with the subject and everything to do with their own self promotion? That's how the Funk's post came across to me. All the previous relies to the OP had something pertinent to say about Mr hutchinson whether it be good or bad - and there's nothing wrong with disagreeing about something or stating that you can't see the point in changing basses however many times durng the set. The last time I saw bonnie in Glasgow 2 or 3 years ago, hutch hanged basses fairly frequently but each had a distinctive sound. Mind you, that was in the armadillo that has excellent acoustics. However, It's quite likely that the average bonnie raitt fan wouldn't have noticed any difference at all. - My experience - others will be different and to repeat the above, I made no criticism of genuine posters or their content. Sorry if anyone has been upset by this.
wateroftyne
You referred to someone who posted a light-hearted comment as 'a tosser'. That's how wars start. Lighten up, man.

We were in the front row of the balcony so I could see exactly what he was doing - maybe because of that I was expecting to hear a different sound and as a result did. jacko
In which case I apologise unreservedly. veering wildly, I was wondering if any of you north eastern players had come across Rob Turnbull from ashington? He's just started posting on the Alembic forum and has a very nice bass so he'd be a good one to get along next time you have a north east bass bash. (Having upset everyone now I don't expect to get an invite).
wateroftyne
Hmm... I only know of two musical Rob Turnbulls around these parts. One replaced Brian Johnson in Geordie, and the other one played bass in Leatherface. But they're Mackems. And a Mackem in Ashington would be a rare thing indeed. Of course you're invited to the next bash. Just don't call people who crack jokes 'tossers', and you'll be fine.
