If I showed up to a gig with my £50 Westfield P bass, nobody would care or notice the difference.

Now you're talking! I had one of those, and I still miss just how very pink it was.

I have mine on the basis that everyone needs a P bass of some sort and it's honestly all the P bass that I need.

It's also the same colour as one of these.

Never operate on the basis of a false premise.

I am on record on here as being (self-confessed) as shallow as a puddle when it comes to looks: for example, I don't care how good Foderas are, I'll never own one, because I can't stand the looks...

This is why I could never own an Alembic. I know and understand their pedigree but boy do I find them hard to look at 🙈

Rics, Alembic (with point on the end), Gus, some Vox models, G&L with a pip on the headstock, white bongo.

Just personal prejudice and otherwise as meaningless as dismissing all Precisions.

Just Googled Gus basses as I've never heard of them. They remind me of Danelectro basses.

That's just showing off!  I remember seeing the guitar that Simon made for Prince (well, one of them) and being blown away by it.  The Gus instruments are so far away from what I play but I would love one, because they're a real sight to behold and are very original.  Yours is a real beauty.

You'd hate my Fauxdera then 🙂

I take comfort from the knowledge that this cost me a similar amount to the price of a Squier CV P or J  and came from a pretty well known Finnish Luthier.

Not really the look I'd go for but I'm sure they are excellent machines.

Indeed. My comment was purely on the aesthetics (no-one would claim Alembics are anything other than excellent instruments to play), but aesthetics are very personal.

In truth there are some many good basses out there of different shapes and styles, it should be possible for anyone to find one they like to play and see.
