SimonK
1994 - 1997 Borrowed various basses all pretty cheap 1997 - 1998 Hohner (not sure model - owned by a function band) 1997 - 1998 Hohner Steinberger copy headless (again owned by function band although I didn't like the balance/look of this one) 1999 – 2004 Aria Pro II Bass IGB68 (also during this period borrowed some rather lovely basses on occasion from @mowf ) 2003 – present Musicman Stingray Fretless Bass DOB: 20th April 1998 2012 – present Musicman Stingray Bass. DOB: 22nd May 2001 I keep thinking about getting a Jazz, a p-bass, and a five string of some variety just out of principle, but the two Stingrays have become members of the family for me - playing them both at a Christmas gig this evening so had them out just now:
Chiliwailer
Only got 3 basses now, a Stingray first bought in 1996, a Fender CS Jazz Bass, and an Ozark Acoustic bought in 1994. Doesn't make me any better or worse than anyone else.
SimonK Posted Monday at 11:53 Share Posted Monday at 11:53 ...I find threads like these helpful to justify future purchases - although do admit to a certain level of worry for those who seem to have had more than twenty or so - I do like basses/music kit but also need to balance it with spending money on alcohol and women! Mokl Posted Monday at 13:00 Share Posted Monday at 13:00 I feel a bit better about mine when I consider the timescale 😄 I don't feel there need to justify it to anybody, I drive a sh+t car, wear my clothes until they're threadbare and don't have large debts. I also flipped most of my bases whilst working in music retail, which made it very easy. I find it interesting to think back at basses I've had and nearly forgotten, silly decisions I've made, instruments I've enjoyed, how my tastes have changed and phases I've been through over 30yrs of playing. Interesting to read about others experiences too. More power to those of you that have never had more than the bass you started on, but no need to look down on those with different priorities. The thing that slows me down (alongside cash) is having enough time to play each instrument. I have extensively gigged all my basses and think that is key for getting to know them. Indeed as gigs vary I would suggest that you need to play something at least ten times live before you get a real impression of what it can do. I've got two guitars (total nine at the moment - so a bit more of a collector of six strings!) that I have had for years but as I've never gigged them remain suspicious of whether I like them. Likewise when you see people on this forum flipping something after a number of weeks (or less) one can't help think that they haven't given the poor instrument a fair chance to shine (or not). There's also the issue of collectors getting in the way of players - if I had a 70s bass I would be playing it live a good few times each year!

This is a great point and something I've learned over the years (took me longer than it should have lol). I wish I'd given more of the basses I've had more gigging time and I probably would have settled on a core selection somewhat sooner and have less regrets about some of the ones I moved on! Makes me ask alot of questions., not only about Bass guitars about everything & anything.under the sun. :? ) Anyway we can only play 1 bass at a time right. Personally I'm a BASS PLAYER , not a bass collector, Right now I have 3 basses 1 acoustic bass . Thanks for your reply to my question. Take care Bass player .
