I'm going to switch it back to the white pickguard for the classic ric look. I noticed on a YT video of someone shielding their ric that their white pickguard was not totally opaque, so after applying copper tape to the back of the pickguard, there was an only just noticable copper tinge to the pickguard when it was fitted. I wasn't sure whether this was a trick of the light or I was imagining it so I experimented with my own white pickguard and I was able to conform that the pickguard did show a copper tinge when the shielding is applied to the back.

To prevent the copper showing through it would be necessary to have an opaque layer between the pickguard and the copper tape. I have a roll of self-adhesive black vinyl which I guessed would work well for this as my 4003is Jetglo so I used a layer of this followed by a layer of copper tape. The black vinyI went to the edge of the pickguard, but the copper tape did not to ensure it isn't visible when looking at the edge of the pickguard.

(Tail lift?)

To add to this conversation, those looking for a rather expensive solution for Ric O Sound. I’m exploring the Strymon Deco as it has a single jack input that is switchable from mono to stereo, so you can run a ts or trs into and flick the switch according to your taste.

It might seem expensive upfront but if you’re running an od/saturation pedal it will replace that, chorus/vib and delay it’ll replace that it also has I believe a lpf and hpf in it.

So this is in theory because the only way I could justify it was to buy one cheap in the states and I won’t have my hands on it for a few months.

But since I primarily play rics, my plan is to embrace ric o sound and get a really nice (likely studio only) setup of say a deco into a JDI Stereo or similar.

Anyway food for thought

I wonder whether the tail lift issue has been fixed with the v2 bridge on my 2024 4003? I suppose I'll know in a few years, but it would be daft if this has not been addressed in the design.

To be honest, I'm not sure how long the issue has taken to manifest itself on mine.  I've had it about 20 years from new, and only noticed the lift when reading about it on here!

I have had a quick look at the cost of replacement non-original bridges - the cost and presumably quality vary a lot.  There is always the option to go down the Geddy Lee route and replace with a Badass bridge with a shaped surround to maintain the overall look of the bridge......I have one of these on one of my jazz basses that's not currently seeing a lot of action 🤔🤔

Now I'm fairly handy around guitars and power tools, but that's making me twitch a bit! Got to make sure it doesn't interrupt the string path for restringing!

How bad does the lift actually get if left unattended? 🤔

The V2 bridge completely eliminates the tail-lift issue.

However, I've got one on a 2010 4003 and it won't adjust the action low enough, so I'm thinking of going back to the original bridge/tailpiece unit.
