Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen (while listening to him, from the name you may believe there are two persons - jazz)

Stanley Clarke (I started listening to him as a youngster, and his playing led me to play bass seriously, well, sort of)

Mark King (slapping fun)

Pekka Pohjola (composer)

Jeff Berlin (attitude)

Tom Kennedy (what a sideman!)

Abraham Laboriel (sessions)

Tommy Shannon (lays down that feel)

James Jamerson (The Sideman)

g-word players...

Barney Kessel (jazz)

Paco de Lucia (flamenco, incredible!)

Allan Holdsworth (different)

Al Di Meola (flashy)

Wayne Krantz (jazz)

Oz Noy (jazz and effects)

As a 12 year old picking up a bass in 1986 my bass gods were:

Gene Simmons

Steve Harris

Duff McKagan

Billy Sheehan

Tom Hamilton

I’ve ripped off a few ideas from all of them along the way.

Started guitar at 14 in 1988 so my main influences were:

The Beatles

John Martyn

Mark Knopfler

Paul Weller

Angus Young

I’ve also always loved Matthias Jabs from the Scorpions but can’t say I’ve ever managed to play like him.

Stand out early bass influences in order that I heard them:

Dennis Dunnaway - his playing on the whole Schools Out album blew me away and still does

Jim Lea

Richie McCracken - live Taste

John Paul Jones

JJ Burnel

All of these have truly influenced my playing and inspired me. Many others would be on a "favourite" bassists list.

Whilst there are many I enjoy, I cant say any guitarists have inspired my playing

Influence in the broadest sense, I don't play anything like most of these:

Jack Bruce

Noel Redding

Geezer Butler

Jeff Ament

Bruce Foxton

Dave Ellefson before he went a bit weird

Colin Greenwood

Duff McKagan

Marcus Miller

Jaco

Mark King

John Taylor

Probably missed loads but those are the ones I either aspire to play like, or hearing them makes me want to play.

Kenny Passarelli - loved the simplicity of his playing but his tone on fretless P is awesome.

Dee Murray

Could add John Taylor, Pino and loads more.

Guitar:

Joe Walsh

Nils Lofgren

Chris Rea (slide)

Mark Knopfler

Gary Rossington
