itu Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Niels-Henning Ørsted-Pedersen (while listening to him, from the name you may believe there are two persons - jazz) Stanley Clarke (I started listening to him as a youngster, and his playing led me to play bass seriously, well, sort of) Mark King (slapping fun) Pekka Pohjola (composer) Jeff Berlin (attitude) Tom Kennedy (what a sideman!) Abraham Laboriel (sessions) Tommy Shannon (lays down that feel) James Jamerson (The Sideman) g-word players... Barney Kessel (jazz) Paco de Lucia (flamenco, incredible!) Allan Holdsworth (different) Al Di Meola (flashy) Wayne Krantz (jazz) Oz Noy (jazz and effects) 2 Quote

Steve Browning Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 First influence was Denis Dunnaway (Alice Cooper). Main influence was John Deacon. It was his sound and approach I sought to draw on mostly. There are many other players I admire but these two shaped me as a bass player. 3 Quote

bassbiscuits Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 As a 12 year old picking up a bass in 1986 my bass gods were: Gene Simmons Steve Harris Duff McKagan Billy Sheehan Tom Hamilton I’ve ripped off a few ideas from all of them along the way. Started guitar at 14 in 1988 so my main influences were: The Beatles John Martyn Mark Knopfler Paul Weller Angus Young I’ve also always loved Matthias Jabs from the Scorpions but can’t say I’ve ever managed to play like him. paul_5 Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Bass: Geddy Lee Les Claypool John Paul Jones John Giblin Billy Sheehan (there are MANY more, but you only wanted 5) Guitar: Ler Zappa Andy Summers Tom Morello Quote
chris_b Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I could list a thousand players. I've stolen from them all, but these guys are the top of my list: Bill Wyman Willie Dixon John McVie Duck Dunn Reggie McBride Hutch Hutchinson Nathan East Quote
NAS Bass Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) Stand out early bass influences in order that I heard them: Dennis Dunnaway - his playing on the whole Schools Out album blew me away and still does Jim Lea Richie McCracken - live Taste John Paul Jones JJ Burnel All of these have truly influenced my playing and inspired me. Many others would be on a "favourite" bassists list. Whilst there are many I enjoy, I cant say any guitarists have inspired my playing Edited December 20, 2024 by NAS Bass typo 1 Quote
uk_lefty Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) Influence in the broadest sense, I don't play anything like most of these: Jack Bruce Noel Redding Geezer Butler Jeff Ament Bruce Foxton Dave Ellefson before he went a bit weird Colin Greenwood Duff McKagan Marcus Miller Jaco Mark King John Taylor Probably missed loads but those are the ones I either aspire to play like, or hearing them makes me want to play. Peejay Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Bass: Martin Turner Sting Macca Kenny Passarelli - loved the simplicity of his playing but his tone on fretless P is awesome. Dee Murray Could add John Taylor, Pino and loads more. Guitar: Joe Walsh Nils Lofgren Chris Rea (slide) Mark Knopfler Gary Rossington Quote
