My BB 1025x

This all came about rather by chance than anything else.

 

I was working (I WFH) one night and during a quiet moment I had my personal laptop open browsing the BassChat Marketplace (idly browsing, I was not in the market for any new purchases) and I was looking at this BB 1025, and The Wife came in to say good night and she saw me looking and rolled her eyes at me 😂

I showed her some more images and said I'd always like the pickups on these, so she said good night and turned to leave the room and pointed to the screen and said get it and I'll give you the money and it'll be your Birthday present.

I was a bit shocked, but not enough to argue with her, so I contacted the seller.

The sale was going well, until it wasn't.

Nobody stepped forward to offer assistance, but I contacted that seller again and suggested I arrange the courier myself. The seller was onboard with this, until I asked for the packaged bass dimensions … and then he stopped replying to my messages.

 

The Wife said "just look for another bass!" 😂

Like it's that easy!

 

Turns out, it actually was!

Following her advice, somewhat downheartedly, as I'd set my hopes on the 1025, I happened upon this marketplace add for a BB1025x!

Contacted the seller, they were happy for me to arrange courier, provided packaged bass dimensions and weight, and the sale went through, with the resulting obligatory NBD post.

 

I love this bass. I love the black and chrome aesthetic of it. I love the sound of it. My Ashdown has been put in its case and into my wardrobe and the Yamaha has taken over use of the stand.

I've changed the strings for my usual Rotosound Flats and I've added strap locks. I really want to change the cloverleaf tuners, but can't find any direct drop-ins that aren't also cloverleaf as I don't want to be drilling extra holes in the headstock.

But this bass is ace.

I had my heart set on the original 1025 I linked above, but after having this for almost a month now, I know this was the better choice of bass for me.

 

 

But you probably didn't come here for stories, and as I'm a firm believer in PoiDH, I have some new photos to share …

Yamaha BB's are awesome bits of kit. Not a huge fan of the scratchplate and metal they put on them now but either way they sound good and play very nicely.

See, I can understand this, because neither was I at first. In general I'm not a huge fan of scratch plates anyway, but this one just works so much better than the 1025 I was looking at.

I'm very happy with it (I may have said this already).

I don't play 5 string very often but I have a BB1025X for the times that I need one. Mine had been rewired as VVT before I bought it which I have found much more usable than my old BB1025 that I had a few years back.

 

If you want lightweight tuners that aren't clover leaf then a set of Hipshot Ultralites with either Y or lollipop top tuny things will fit straight in. You'll need to drill a hole for each tuner but if/when you return it to stock in the future then the extra hole won't be visible.

I've got a 2025 and it's fabulous. I expect a 1025(x) is very, very similar.

 

I'd love to hear one of these with flats on. That might be a very good combination.

I'm still recovering from a knackered shoulder, but I'm also in the process of composing my first original tune, and I'm going to use this bass for that, so once I have anything recorded - that I'm happy with - I'll be sharing to be torn apart. 😂

The 10/20 Series BB basses were the best ever BB basses in my opinion. They were a  unique design with a huge tone. There's nothing else that sounds like them.I think they look great,too. I absolutely love mine.

I've got Status flats on my BB2024x, they’ve been on there since 2016 according to my records. It is amazing. 

I would buy another BB2024x if one came up and put rounds on it and also fit it with a P-Retro. I used to have 2 but sold the white one to raise cash for something years ago.

I am going to put some Thomastik flats on my 2024x when I get round to it. It's had the same set of Elites on it for fourteen years since I bought it, I've probably had my money's worth out of them.

 

I wouldn't put on P-Retro on one of these basses though, Sean. To me a better choice would be an external preamp pedal like a Sadowsky,. I've thought about one of those myself or, even better, a Yamaha NE1 preamp pedal if you can find a used one.
