Best pedal you bought in 2024

Borrowing the idea from another forum but why not.

 

For me it was the JHS Punchline

Behringer BDI21, an invaluable bit of kit to have at gigs as a just-in-case.

Either the Mark Bass Vintage Preamp pedal or the Fairfield The Accountant compressor.

 

Both very good.

 

For guitar use I got one of the UA Tape Delay pedals when they had their big price drop. That's really nice for old dirty delay stuff.

3 Leaf Audio Doom 2. As all I had before were the octaves and filters I initially bought it to add a fuzz to the collection. I didn't think I'd much actual use for another fuzz (I don't play rock/doom/metal so I never have much need) BUT when I plugged it in... its a totally different kind of fuzz than I'm used to. Much more dynamic and responsive, and its the basis of any synth sounds I need.

… probably the Lusithand Alma Mk II comp I bought from Nuno direct when on sale.

 

However the most pleasantly surprising one was the Digitech Bass Squeeze. Not a lot of love for them on the reviews but I quite actually like it!

 

Honourable mention goes to the Walrus Audio Mira comp though 😎.

Multifx feels like cheating but probably the Quad Cortex for me. For all the stick it gets for the built in models, the Hiwatt bass amp and the clean amp from the Gojira extension are absolutely fantastic on bass.

 

Add to that being able to load up some very accurate captures of some fave pedals like the SLO is incredible.

 

Honourable mention to the Science Mother preamp (EAE collab) which sounds incredible for both guitar and bass. The inclusion of the depth and absence controls aswell as the 3 band eq make it a great tone shaper. The dirty channel emphasises some frequencies on bass that I don't personally care for in isolation but I think would help cut through in a mix pretty well, otherwise it might take the no. 1 spot.

Not strictly a pedal, but I bought a (nearly new) Cioks DC7 power supply, and it has been a revelation. I was previously using a Caline power supply, which was noisy and unreliable. It couldn't manage all my power needs. 

 

Runner up is a Laney Digbeth DB-pre.  It sounds good to my ears and the built in headphones out is great for practice when traveling.  

 

TL;DR Cioks DC7 expensive but amazing power supply 

Laney Digbeth DB-pre good cheap DI/preamp.

Where did you get the Punchline from?

I've been trying to buy one, it's been impossible.

I've been searching for a Di pedal that had a simple clean EQ section for a small pedal board project.

After trying a few of the usual suspects I landed on the JHS Clover. The EQ is warm and soft and perfectly partners the sound of my short scale passive basses.

The Go is excellent, its been a game changer for when the child is asleep in the car or just needs supervision. Nice to just sit in front of the TV for a noodle too.

I spend at least a month a year in the US so every time I arrive I have a bunch of pedals waiting for me (and sometimes a bass)

Agreed I had the Nux mighty plug (non-pro) and the Mooer P1 and the Katana:Go is leagues ahead. 
 

I still need to spend some quality time time with it though and dial in some presets that match my Helix presets as close as possible.

I bought an Analog Music Company SHSL at the same time as the Source Audio Reflex that was sold on here recently. I’d been holding off on getting an SHSL until I’d figured out how to add effective expression control as it looked like it would be relatively inexpressive (if you’ll pardon the terrible pun) without it. I tried them together recently and they are a powerful duo. I’ve been looking to get Tim Commerford’s tone from Calm Like a Bomb and I think this may do it.

 

I bought a fuzz and a distortion I really like but I’ll hold judgment on those until I’ve played them more. The other pedal that really sticks in the memory is the Doc Lloyd DLA-2A. It completed my main board and is a truly fantastic bit of kit.

The only effects unit I bought this year, the HX Stomp XL - definitely an evolution on how I do things. Everything is now small and clean looking. No damned patch cables getting in the way, and partnered with the Nu>X C-5RC wireless system really frees up my floor space.

Lazy answer I know but the hx stomp has been an absolute game changer for me and I'm regularly kicking myself for not taking the plunge earlier as this year has been my biggest revolving door of pedals to date

 

Having said that I have found a few gems

 

Raygun FX meatbox - stupidly cheap but sounded absolutely incredible as a fuzz/drive. Lots of low end loss to be expected but if they brought this out with a blend it would be a total giant slayer

 

Jam pedals dynassaur - I'd been using a SD studio compressor for a good few years and never had any trouble but this has a t rex painted on it. Can't argue with that. 

 

Harley Benton magnum di - bought on a whim but it's turned into my secret sauce into the mixing desk, this should be more popular!

… I bought a Fender Micro DI that looks to be made in the same factory as try HB one, great for what it is and I never had any complaints about the DI sound when I used it!

an accidental purchase off eBay - ild not found an octave I had liked previously - just lots of things I didn’t. This thing is brilliant though, @jimbobothy was kind enough to let me try all of his billion octaves - and I still prefered my OC-2 (or his!)

I’ve since removed the -2octave to give it a bit more gain.

I've bought a lot of pedals this year, most of them brilliant, some duds bought on a whim, but the one that has absolutely blown me away from day one is the Mammoth Factory Fuzz by Red Rocket Music. It just does exactly what I've always wanted a dirt pedal to do. That's the only way I can describe it. It works for me.
