Main theme running through this thread seems to be that the bass players with the best job security achieve this not by being a Charles Berthold wannabe, but by bringing added value to a band - lead and/or BVs, taking on admin (bookings, media), providing PA, transport, doubling on another instrument. The other factor is being able to somehow get along with all the other people in the band, even when provoked, otherwise it's eventually gonna end in tears and/or bruises!

You need to play to a standard to join a band. Generally, staying in a band is about building relationships and a team spirit. Bendricks Rock seems particularly healthy as we share a warped sense of humour (how many bands have a tagline like "Keep It Moist".

Thinking about this in greater depth, I don`t really do that much in my gigging band.

Unlike many on here I don`t set up PAs, or lights, I don`t contribute to the song-writing, I don`t have anything to do with the merch and cos of my back I don`t gig with an amp so all I take along is my bass. I don`t even print set-lists.

I play bass and I do backing vox.

That's pretty much me. However, I do wind leads and do a little light lifting.

I've now trained my wife to roll up leads at the end of the night plus she helps load the gear into the various cars.

Have to point out she can lift the same weight as me at the gym.

I have an important role.

I'm there to make everyone else look good.

Same for me, we’ve a great singer and 2 really good guitarists, me & the drummer do our jobs so those 3 can shine.

I could be replaced pretty easily. In fact, both cover bands I play in have replacements for me and I’ve lined them up, should I not be able to do a gig. Latest cover band I’m in, we’ve only done one gig this year, I got my replacement to do a full set rehearsal, so I could work on sound and effects before our one and only gig. I’m not precious.

Anyone is welcome to wrap my leads but almost nobody does because as soon as they start rolling them I have to teach them how to wrap them and that almost never sinks in.

I tie the leads in a bow. Lol

I used to play with the Victory/Cornford amp designer. He always told me off for tying my leads in  a knot

I coil them now, like he did, with the velcro tag to hold them together

It stops my mic leads dying so soon

Good advice. My amp tech taught me the same thing, maybe 30 years ago.

In my last band, if I wasn’t quick at getting back to the stage after the final song the theatre stage crew

would have ( very helpfully )started packing stuff down. They always coiled the cables correctly but

secured them with tape which sometimes made them sticky. A few years ago I bought a pack of 10

D’Addario cable ties which I still use - they are brilliant and keep them tidy with no mess.

Drummer and myself look after the PA. Its his but i carry the larger 3-way 15's and know all about setting them up.

When it comes to leads we both have the same ethic. Leads are looped in approx 10-12" loops and then secured with a re-usable cable tie. My own leads all have velcro ties. Looping means less strain on the cable when stored.

when you have dozens of leads at 1am in a pub and you just want to get home, thats exactly how I do them, loosely..stops them getting tangled up in the leads boxes as well.

I was a Sea Scout so was taught to hank a rope properly. So now, when I coil a lead, every loop gets a little half-twist.

I picked it up from electricians as an apprentice back in 70's.
