FretsOnFire Posted January 2 Posted January 2 I've currently got a line 6 ld15 amp and I'm looking to upgrade. I've got a budget of £230 and want the best bang for my buck. I will be using it for spare room practice, studio jamming and small venue gigging. Let's hear some recommendations please Quote
Downunderwonder Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Classifieds. You are looking for an old combo with a bit of poke. Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Peavey. 150w and 15" speaker. If your practice amp is in good condition you might not take too bad of a bath px'ing at a shop. 2 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 2 Posted January 2 I'd start with what is local on Facebook and Gumtree... might be a surprise lurking round the corner. 1 Quote
Pea Turgh Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Crikey there are some deals about. As an example; or old cab… … plus one of those discounted brand new TC heads people posted about the other day; Barely scratching the surface! 1 Quote

A real beaut of an amp but it only just kept up with the big band jazz. I don't think it would keep up with too many pub rock gigs. That one has an intermittent fault so hard pass. 1 Quote

Reggaebass Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Just a suggestion, have you looked at the Ashdown RM500, they really are a very good amp and I’d say you should get one around your budget Quote
Al Krow Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) 9 minutes ago, FretsOnFire said: A combo amp would be preferable Ah sorry, I missed that. In which case you could also treat yourself to a powered PA speaker - you'll get a lot bang for your buck. Sometimes also referred to as 'FRFR' speakers. There's a massive thread on it somewhere and plenty of BC fans of that approach. Edited January 3 by Al Krow Quote
Pea Turgh Posted January 3 Posted January 3 (edited) Small but capable combo. Got to be a secondhand Fender Rumble 100 v3. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/305995495048?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=NNXsQ2i9SeS&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=tEgOCJh6Qn2&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Edited January 3 by Pea Turgh 2 Quote
Dan Dare Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Pea Turgh's suggestion above of that 100w Rumble is sound. It's collection only from Bradford, which is a schlepp from where you are, but that's a very good price for one of those. Quote

Odd looking coffee table that makes bass noises. 6 minutes ago, Dan Dare said: Pea Turgh's suggestion above of that 100w Rumble is sound. Reason this didn't rate a mention until now is that is.indeed a crazy low price. Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Rumbles are a good solid sounding amp at reasonable weight. Quote
FretsOnFire Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Many thanks for the replies I will continue to keep an eye on local listings for a deal. I've been very tempted about asking my brother in law if he's up for a trip to Bradford to pick up a Fender Rumble (He originates from Hull so could make a weekend of it) 😂😂 Out of interest if you were to recommend something brand new at the same price point what would it be? Many thanks again Dave Quote
Downunderwonder Posted January 4 Posted January 4 No chance for anything new for £230 that can keep up with drums. If there was a gunfight on you are the guy planning to show up with a knife, and not one any good for sticking in anyone. You really ought to jump on that Trace combo just down the road from you. It's not too big when your budget is so small. Someone is going to "or best offer" more than the opening gambit of that ebay Rumble and turn it into a private auction. You have to move air to make bass. Moving air takes decent speakers and amp power. If you want something you can carry in one hand you want to treble your budget. Get your head in the game. Quote

Pea Turgh Posted January 5 Posted January 5 A little stretch of your budget and you could get this; Quote
Pea Turgh Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Browsing the classifieds for my imaginary lottery win, I’m just spotting loads of deals for you! Quote
lemmywinks Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Fender Rumble 100 combo for £200 in Southend here: https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1315232262824342/ Quote
Reggaebass Posted January 6 Posted January 6 I don’t know where your located but I was browsing something else and I saw this ampeg BA 115 on gumtree, looks tidy Quote
M@23 Posted January 6 Posted January 6 Agreed that 2nd hand is the way to go. If I wasn’t sure what I wanted I’d browse the classifieds, see what options appear and then research them and see if they tickled my fancy. I just sold a TC RH750 AND matching RS212 cab for £350. Over budget, but I thought I was giving it away at £400 and just wanted rid. So perhaps worth keeping an eye out for similar bargains as people look to unload gear that is taking up space in the spare room. And to be honest, you can’t go too far wrong with any of the known brands and their 250-500w, *x10 or *x12 offerings. Quote
