Because on the first edition something like 30~35 years ago, the fingerboard inlays were dolphins. 😉

There was no fretless version way back in 1989 when it was first released, even if Hans-Peter Wilfer is also pretending that the body shape is reminiscent of a dolphin (that he certainly never saw and had to put dolphin inlays for clarification). ☝🏻🤓

Due to its pickup configuration, and therefore its versatility, Warwick saw it as an instrument that for many would be all-porpoise.

You can get fretless versions with inlays if you requested; I have had one, so I can state that as fact.  However, the Dolphin is not a common bass and the fretless version was/is even rarer again.

My dolphin pro1 appears to have been fretless at birth.  Fretted by a previous owner. So ebony board, stainless frets and an extra fret too.  Sustain forever.

It would be a great shame to convert this one to frets ... but it would work really well.
