BassApprentice Posted Wednesday at 11:19 Posted Wednesday at 11:19 My Squier Vista Musicmaster. Now edging on being with me 20 years as my first bass and even though I rarely play - it won't be going anywhere. Quote
JapanAxe Posted Wednesday at 11:20 Posted Wednesday at 11:20 I would have to say there are things I haven't thought of replacing yet. Quote
Cat Burrito Posted Wednesday at 11:59 Posted Wednesday at 11:59 I've commented on vaguely similar threads historically, only to go back and discover my at-the-time dream bass is long sold on. However, around 20 years back, I picked up a cheap(ish) Rally mandolin. It has a pickup and is all solid woods (i.e. no laminate). When I got divorced in 2010, I literally sold everything I had and replaced everything I own. Except this mandolin. I've played others, even identical Rally ones from the same shop at the time but this one just has some magic that I can't explain. It was about £250 and even in the unlikely event of someone offering me £2.5k, it's never for sale. I think it's stood the test of time to show that is one load of talk that I am actually walking. 1 Quote
dave_bass5 Posted Wednesday at 12:13 Posted Wednesday at 12:13 My Fender Sandblasted P bass. Ive brought other basses since getting it, but all have bene sold and I still have the Fender. That bass will never leave me. Quote
neepheid Posted Wednesday at 12:21 Posted Wednesday at 12:21 Never say never. Basses (especially higher value ones) are the first things to go if you get yourself in a financial pickle. There are basses I never intended or wanted to sell, but had to. It sucks, but so does being homeless. I'm not sure that's what the OP was getting at anyway, because I thought about listing some basses I currently have and hope never to have to sell. But I was thinking it was more along the lines of "stuff you've had for ages that you keep because it works well enough that you've never thought about replacing, even though it has been superceded at least once by a shinier model with go-faster stripes". 3 Quote

You make a good point. When I was single I briefly became homeless, I spent two weeks (so not long) living in a stairwell behind a cinema. I still owned my first bass. A friend stored it for me. Later, while living in a bed-sit, I got mucked around financially (I was naive and trusted the words of the wrong people) and it ended up that my landlord was taking very penny I had. Most weeks I would be lucky if I got to eat once. I didn’t like to talk about it, but sometimes a friend might buy me a bag of chips or something. And still I held onto that bass. Years later, while married, finances became troublesome once again. Though it wasn’t really my fault, so that we could both eat, I felt that I needed to sell my beloved bass. I got all of £60 for it. And I have regretted it every day since. 3 Quote

tauzero Posted Wednesday at 13:59 Posted Wednesday at 13:59 Basses: My first Warwick, a JD Thumb, which I've had since 1988. I don't really use it since moving to 5-strings but I wouldn't sell it. My first Antoniotsai bass, the first 5-string I've had that felt as good to me as the Warwick My first and second Sei headless basses, an Original fretless and Flamboyant fretted, which are also lovely to play Other: Eko Ranger VI which I bought in the 1980s - my noodling around at home guitar Zoom MS-60B which is my swiss army knife pedal 1 Quote
fretmeister Posted Wednesday at 14:08 Posted Wednesday at 14:08 My Sandberg TT4 Superlight, a Fender Standard Strat that I bought new in 2003 and my Boss BC-1X compressor. With that bass and compressor I am happy to plug into just about everything and not really worry about it. Quote

For me it would be my Orange OBC112 cab. Sounds great, is the correct colour, and weighs a reasonable amount (I used to have to carry around a TE combo of much the same size but double the weight). mikebass456 Posted Wednesday at 14:22 Posted Wednesday at 14:22 My Status Energy 5 string headless bass. Bought new in the very early 90's (traded in a Washburn Status and Westone Thunder III to afford it). From MOR Music in York. Doesn't get much use at the moment, but is such a joy to play and perfectly balanced - immense sound from the twin J pickups too! Quote
Terry M. Posted Wednesday at 14:46 Posted Wednesday at 14:46 I have a broadneck Warwick Thumb 5 string and a broadneck Streamer Stage One 5 string that ain't going nowhere. Everything else seems to come and go. Also I factor in their rarity on the used market so that plays a small part. They hardly turn up! 2 Quote

Twigman Posted Wednesday at 15:12 Posted Wednesday at 15:12 My 2017 EBMM USA Sterling 4HH black with a matching headstock bought new and patiently waited for for 5 months after ordering killed my bass GAS. Or so I thought. Recently I've been tempted by a Fender Custom Shop Jazz. - the £5k plus price tag isn't really putting me off as much as it perhaps should.....so far I have resisted, mind. That said it would only be an addition to the stable and would not replace the EBMM. I don't think that will ever go. I will never part with my 1982/3 Sqiuer JV62 Precision in Fiesta Red that I have owned from new. I paid £129 from a music shop in Romford. - (I can't remember the name but was tempted to shop there by an advert in Melody Maker). Quote
gjones Posted Wednesday at 15:24 Posted Wednesday at 15:24 I've owned a Barefaced Compact (now discontinued) for quite a few years now, which is a great sounding, very light and extremely loud cab. I tried to replace it with a Super Compact but it wasn't any lighter, didn't sound any better and was nowhere near as loud. So I sold the Super Compact and kept the Compact. I do have a Markbass CMD 12 P combo, which is great, but I'm pretty sure the Barefaced could go louder if that's what was needed for the gig. Quote

miles'tone Posted Wednesday at 15:28 Posted Wednesday at 15:28 I never think about replacing any gear until I suddenly do. Nothing is safe. Quote
BlueMoon Posted Wednesday at 15:33 Posted Wednesday at 15:33 The wife! She tolerates more basses coming in than going out, and that is a keeper in my book. 2 Quote

Exactly what I was thinking- just stuff that does what you need. More about utility than attachment. 😉 Edited Wednesday at 15:39 by redbandit599 Quote

bassbiscuits Posted Wednesday at 16:12 Posted Wednesday at 16:12 It’s a boring answer from me, but actually most of my gear is stuff I’ve had and used for years with no desire to replace / upgrade. Ive got a float of gear which I take a punt on buying, trying and moving on, but the majority of my stuff isn’t going anywhere. Quote
