Last July I bit the bullet and ordered a custom built Alpher bass.

Just had the latest pics through of the nearly finished item

Behold! My new Hammerhead!

Sassafras body

Wenge neck and board

Nordy pickups

John east pre

Gone for a roadworn purple finish!

Can't wait to play it

I'm not into the relic thing, especially on basses that haven't been on the market long enough to gather more than some minor playwear or bumps, but I have to admit: the Hammerhead has a really cool modern classic thing going on, and they made it work!

Best of luck with the final bit of waiting! :)

Looks ace!

What’s Sassafras like in terms of other tone woods? (Is it like alder, ash, limbs, mahogany etc…?)

Yo dude, thanks man, sassafras was recommended by Chris at Alpher, similar to swamp ash but better, we shall see!

'Sufferin' sukatash' was a favourite utterance of Yosimite Sam IIRC.

Man those Alphers look so cool, I fully expect some recordings once you've got it!

If it arrives by the end of the month then it'll appear on my bands next album 😁, but yeah I'll try and get some vids and sound clips

It has arrived, great timing too, I'm in the studio this week.

It's bloody light, feels amazing and I can't wait to plug it in!

A man at one with his bass 👍

PS I have that PUP combination in a similarly unique bass, albeit fretless, very very nice indeed

Sassafras is just between ash and alder tone wise, but way lighter, for those knowing that wood is important, for the others it's just another wood with a fancy name.

It's a wood used by Fender in the very early days and, for example, Eric Johnson's favourite Stratocaster, Virginia, from 1954, has a body made out of this excellent wood.

I had a Jazz Bass made by luthier with this wood for the body and it sounded amazingly good, but I had too many Jazz Basses back then.

It's damn light, I mean I was surprised how light it was, I thought the box was empty at first!

The sound! Got a John east pre amp too. It basically does everything!

I imagine some of my basses will be redundant now! Much like my bank balance
