Rayman Posted January 10 Posted January 10 So it’s been a while since anything new came into Rayman towers. So between Xmas and New Year I treated myself to a new project….. a Hohner Pro JJ bass. It was dirty, set up like a dog, terrible action and most irritatingly (after I specifically asked the seller if it all worked as it should, he told me it did, he lied), the active electronics weren’t firing on all cylinders. So, after a deep clean, a new CTS pot for the neck pup and a new trim pot for the circuit board (that was fiddly, but a relatively straightforward fix), new strings, new gold control knobs and a nice setup (lovely low action), this thing is an absolute joy to play. ‘90/91 I’m guessing, Cort factory in Korea, it’s a quality instrument. Lovely frets, very comfortable and I think it looks awesome. It’s easily as good as anything sub 1K new, easily. Very impressed indeed. A really really great bass, and it sounds killer too, massive dubby low end and sparkly highs, what else do you want? My plan was to flip it on, but I dunno, I think I’ll keep it for now. I haven’t put it down since it was finished. 12 Quote
Bagman Posted January 10 Posted January 10 In 1988/89 I had a Hohner B2A, was well made I also had a try on a Hohner Jack which I thought was well made if a bit vague in the electronics department well done you - instrument looks great 1 Quote
Rayman Posted January 10 Author Posted January 10 Yeah, the best active jazz sound I ever had was with a Hohner B bass, which regrettably sold. So I was hoping this one would be close to that…. it kind of is, but kind of isn’t too, but it sounds really awesome. No need for any pointless “upgrades” here. 1 Quote
lemmywinks Posted January 10 Posted January 10 (edited) I have one of these, I've modded it over the years and the body is the only original part though as I never liked the pickups or preamp. Not a fan of gold hardware either so I went all black but that veneer is beautiful. Edited January 10 by lemmywinks 4 Quote

Sean Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Nice. I've had loads of Hohner basses but never one of those. 1 Quote
lemmywinks Posted January 11 Posted January 11 A lot of the Pro JJ finishes look very poor IMO, like the old cheap jazz copies with the solid black forearm contour. The only ones that look decent are the dark natural veneers like this one and the stained ones. They did a pinkish red one which looks good but I've never seen one of those in the UK. 1 Quote
