prowla Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Every time I see someone call them a "Squire", I just think "retard". (I know you're not supposed to use that word these days, but that is exactly the word I think.) 3 1 1 Quote
bremen Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Thought crime! So verboten is that word in Stupidland, that a forum I use doesn't even allow the word 'retardant' which is particularly ridiculous as it's a studio building thread and the phrase 'fire retardant' is quite useful. 3 Quote

LeftyJ Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) In terms of value for money I think Squier are doing a hell of a job in recent years. When I started playing guitar in 1999 there were just the Affinity Series and Standard Series which were very decent but nothing special, and the plywood Bullet Strat which was... meh? But with the introduction of the Vintage Modified series and especially the Classic Vibe they really made a huge leap. I'm not too familiar with their current bass offerings, but I would happily play one of the Classic Vibe Jazzmasters or Telecasters, especially that Andertons limited edition in Danish Pete Purple! Lush My number 1 guitar is a 1980s MIJ Squier E-series Strat and I wouldn't trade it for anything. But I guess I fell for it and now I'm feeding the troll. Sorry! Edited January 13 by LeftyJ 3 Quote
Twigman Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I bought a new Squier in 1984 for £129 - JV62P fiesta red - i still have it. I'm never selling it but also never play it. Quote
asingardenof Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) I still have my Cort-made Korean Squier P I bought new in 1998. Definitely coming with me to the grave, that one. Edited January 13 by asingardenof Squire --> Squier Quote

Better hope @prowla doesn't spot this. Ah. 😂 Some of the nicest basses I have owned have been Squiers. My old JV P bass was the best P bass I have held in my hands. Absolutely gorgeous. I've always tended to listen to my basses with my ears, not my eyes*. *Apart from anything with a tort plate, obvs... Quote

prowla Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I guess I'm used to the dichotomy: my favourite bass player is Chris Squire and one of my favourite artistes is Billy Squier. Quote

tauzero Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Being slightly curious about this, I just did a search for "squire bass", used condition, UK only, on That Ebay. That search returns both Squires and Squiers. Intriguingly, until you reach £250, it's about 80% Squier and 20% Squire, then there's suddenly a great glut of Squires from £250 to £260, then the ability to read the name on the headstock seems to reassert itself. 4 Quote
Bass4real Posted Saturday at 16:06 Author Posted Saturday at 16:06 (edited) This is what I know Ok you're watching a video or at a live show , the Bass player is playing a fender bass and it sounds really good, Any professional BASS PLAYER doesn't buy a bass off the shelf, then uses said Bass , UNTIL HE OR SHE GETS THE fender BASS he got probably from Fender directly built exactly the way he wants it .for $0.00.00 I'm not saying Fender squires are shit BUT it is just one their bottom of the barrel basses , That In my opinion is a bass not worth the price fender wants for it and them. Ya want an off the shelf fender squier . Kool spend about another $700.00 to upgrade pretty much the entire bass. If you're a newbie to the bass guitar Buy a Fender Squire :?) Again this is about a personal Experience . I don't and won't play any Fender Bass again . doesn't matter if it's fenders cheapest bass or their most expensive. If you like fender BASSes Why would you care what I think about them Edited Saturday at 16:16 by Bass4real 2 1 Quote

bremen Posted Saturday at 17:28 Posted Saturday at 17:28 I don't know that he's a troll. I think he's just saying that Fenders are overpriced, Squiers are over-rated and he doesn't like them. Fair enough - opinions are, as Adolf Hitler said, like testicles: everyone's got one. 1 Quote
dclaassen Posted Sunday at 20:23 Posted Sunday at 20:23 I was around when inexpensive basses were Teisco and the ilk. Really cheap and hard to play. CBS Fenders were uneven. Nobody at that time wanted a Fender that wasn’t pre-CBS. Gibson was just starting to make interesting basses. Most everything else was way too expensive. Kramer, Ovations, etc were just out. It was hard to find a gig-worthy bass that was affordable. I was lucky to find a 63 Jazz. Today, you can buy a very serviceable instrument for £200 or less. Being a real gear snob, I resist this, but admit that having good affordable instruments is real progress, and won’t throw stones. Quote
