People will always ask. There's YouTube, Google and thousands of resources. It's a difficult thing to understand if you can't do maths and physics. And if you can do maths and physics, then you don't need to ask. 🤣

There's many different ways of combining amps and cabs, and the electrical side of that is only of interest to people who are interested in it.

I agree Tim, but how else do we dispel the myths and utter ballcocks that some are convinced are true? You know the ones:

  • Trace Watts are bigger than anyone else's (I love the sound of a Trace)
  • Valve Amps are more powerful than solid state.
  • Class D is weedy/unreliable (only the cheap far eastern stuff on E,I,E,I,O Express, BangBad, the Evil Bay and Amazoff.com).

Sadly, most people will take the easy/lazy option, but we must still try to argue the truth.

I think rather than delving into heavy formulas and technical explanations a more simple approach might work. Maybe the mods would make it a sticky, as this thread will eventually just disappear.

I thought this was already somewhere else, but have searched.

Maybe a Myth/Fact list of all the things that are commonly stated. 8"/10"/15" speakers. Valve/Solid State amps. Speakers in parallel/series.

Lowest impedance for an amp.

Open circuit issues for valve/solid state.

Types of distortion speaker/premap/poweramp and the problems and what to avoid.

Power amp manufacturer's figures including THD% at Hz.

I don't think any of them really require an in depth understanding of why in electronics terms, they're important. I think that's the part that throws the bass player in the street when they say "I don't understand watts and ohms", it's the application and pitfalls rather than what a watt or an ohm is.

More pictures/photos.

Thing is the strength of a forum is the personal interaction - asking the question in your own words and hearing someone's answer. Stickies or FAQs work for some people, but I always wonder at the point of a forum where people just say "do a search as we've talked about this before"... to me this misses the point of a forum.

(BTW Trace Watts are bigger than other brand's Watts - they used to grow them specially and combine with groovilium)

...and the comparison of about similar units pricewise. A £179 solid state amp is not directly comparable to a £1500 valve amp.

We must also remember that there’s a lot of incorrect and terrible advice given through YouTube and other such platforms.

It's getting worse. ChatGPT is really bad, because what it posts comes from searching sources on line. When the search turns up bad information it passes it on without peer review. 😒

This. It's an idiot amplifier. Even more reliable source of misinformation than Quora.

And this is why a valve Trace amp into an open circuit speaker will be infinitely loud. So loud that it will drive your ears into instant shutdown so you won't actually hear anything.

I totally agree Bill.  I see it when I'm forced over to the guitar side to help out with support, and some of the comments players state as fact would take your breath away... they are really that gag-worthy.
