PaulThePlug Posted January 21 Posted January 21 (edited) Harley B BP50 spied at a price i couldn't not leave it. Driving home wondering what lies beneath the scratch plate? No wiring help hole - Yay... But, who ever drilled the Scratch Plate holes, took a couple of attempts at the bottom ones - Boo... and the wiring hole in the control cavity is right at the top, with what looks like the finish sheet just topping it. So looks like Sanding Down the finish - specially as there are reports of a lot of hard filler used along with the double plate holes - may not be practical... which is a shame. Tuners are fine, Bridge is fine, Roswell Pickup is fine - Might do 'lectrics. So the only mod likely is the Headstock.. Mike Dirnt template - pdf wouldn't print full size from the Android App, so had to arse about with the computer. Jig Sawed... now for some sanding... got a cheeky decal coming... police squad Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I need to do that headstock mod to mine I've aso got better tuners as they feel sloppy, even though they hold tune just fine 1 Quote

PaulThePlug Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 Going to remove the finish back to whatever wood is under there... Any tips by anyone who has removed the photo finish. Sanding and More Sanding, or Heat Gun? 1 Quote

The poly is thick, really thick around the edges. 'Foto Flame' is glued to the body, removing it peels away a layer of wood below. The Lime/Linden below is not pretty, has fairly plain grain and you might find knots. I'd leave the finish be; fill the screw holes, give it a light sand then hit it with a "make paint stick" plastic primer. You'll have a much flatter durable base for your choice of colour. 1 Quote
andyonbass Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Have you considered a vinyl wrap? There's a couple of topics on here ..... 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 (edited) Thanks all... I'm gonna go for it, that knot looks knarley cool - hope i get one of them! Gonna be a Tru-Oil Slurry Finish. Edited Sunday at 14:04 by PaulThePlug Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 (edited) Quick go with an orbital 40 grit Love the smell of sanding lacquer in the afternoon! Wood under the Photo-Grain layer looks OK so far... Edited January 24 by PaulThePlug 2 Quote
tauzero Posted January 24 Posted January 24 You could use a wax repair stick to fill the multiple holes pretty much invisibly. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/325271292000 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 ^ PVA'd some matchsticks in the scratchplate holes... 1 Quote

PaulThePlug Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 (edited) 40 Grit Orbital Went thru the thin veneer chasing off the photo grain. Ta-dah! My very own Knotty... still some 40 sanding to go... Plan is for a bit of tactile wood feel, not Super-Smooth. Tru-Oil with 120 using a slow and lightly applied orbital for Slurry, then Dry and Buff. Then again with 240. Thoughts? PaulThePlug Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 (edited) String Length Issue? Rested the neck in the body, and offered up the Adagio Flats sacross the headstock, see what it looks like. The E is pulled thru the slot, till the thick winding, but has all this spare. The A, D & G are pulled up taught and fine, thick wind is short from the peg. Peg Center is 37" from the Bridge E Thick Wind is 38" - same as the A. String Thru Std or Odd Long String? Should i just wind the thick part round the peg? What flat wounds are you using on your HB PB50? Any cheap-ish make / model of Flats that are slightly shorter? Edited January 25 by PaulThePlug 1 Quote

Had the same set of TI flats on one since 2014, silk on E clears the nut by 40mm. On the 2 I fitted 2 saddle bridges that silk clearance drops to 4mm with the TIs and 10mm with the Status Hotwire tapes. Quote
