I'm looking for general advice for securing a double bass to the wall, as we now have a toddler loose in our flat, so it's no longer safe just propped up in the corner. Solutions that would also work for cellos would be very welcome. Thanks!

I had this precise problem. I used a Hercules bass stand which I then weighed down at the back with a box of books so it was impossible to topple over (for a toddler, at least).

I have a spare Hercules bass stand somewhere you could try if you’re anywhere near Bristol.

I worry that matter might meet anti-matter if you two meet 🙂

I built this a few years ago and still use it. I forged the metal part but you could use other metal pieces or more wood to make the receiver for the neck. It is a snug fit with foam rubber for the neck and a velcro strap to hold the neck in place. I also used a piece of wood and steel on the floor to guide the end pin so it is always the right distance from the wall and the bass has a slight lean to the wall. Finally I put a small cushion on the wall the keep the bass from moving once it is standing in place and then cover the whole thing with an old sheet to keep dust off. I have used it with two different basses with no problems. Not sure how it would stand up to a toddler or a cat but it works for me.

Unfortunately (or fortunately from a physics point of view...) I'm not anywhere near Bristol, but thanks for the recommendation, I'll have a look at those.

They’re the original. I’m a mere pretender.

I guess you're the Flexocor to my Original Flexocor?

This is more the sort of thing I was thinking of, but I was hoping for something more 'off the rack', because I really don't have that sort of skill set. Ideally it would work with a cover as well.

Okay, good to know, I'll PM you if I decide to go in that direction.

I'd have to be able to catch him first!

Ain't that the truth.  How someone who only learned to walk last summer can be so fast, and able to climb up things that shouldn't be possible to climb is beyond me.  The little tyke is now tall enough to be able to work door handles so we have to lock the hall door so he doesn't fall down the stairs or escape out of the front door.

No problems at all.

Unfortunately my wife has vetoed this option, but it is the closest so far to what I'm after. It would be good though to have something that works with a case, as I'm not only worried about my toddler pulling the bass down, but also whacking it with any number of implements!

The speed of development is insane isn't it?! We haven't had to start worrying about the door handles yet, but with the rate that he's growing, it won't be long...
