Bass4real Posted January 24 Posted January 24 What was the very first song you learned to play on BASS from beginning to end ? THE 1st song I learned from beginning to end was YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET By BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE I think :?) 1 Quote
Twigman Posted January 24 Posted January 24 The first song I tried to play was Black Dog by Led Zeppellin - I probably aimed too high for a starter but I did learn the main riff. The first song I played all the way through was a song I wrote myself called The Tree. it was far simpler. 1 Quote
Bluewine Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Midnight Hour, Wilson Pickett .And it was also the first full song I played with a band. Daryl 6 Quote
Reggaebass Posted January 24 Posted January 24 For me it was Natural Mystic from the Exodus album , it’s the first album I learned to play all the way through, I still play it now occasionally , wonderful basslines 2 Quote
MichaelDean Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I can't really remember the first song, but I did get the tab book for Rage Against The Machine's self titled album very early on. That was a really good introduction to bass. Lots of good rhythmic work, some speedy fingering, and a whole lot of fun. 1 Quote
Velarian Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Sometimes- The Stranglers. First track on Rattus Norvegicus. Quote
neepheid Posted January 24 Posted January 24 "Peaches" by The Stranglers. Learned it on the bottom four strings of a guitar so I had something to play when I went to the music shop to buy my first bass. 1 Quote
Delberthot Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Another One Bites the Dust - Christmas day 1987. I was 12 years old. Marlin Slammer, yellow curly cable and Squier 15w guitar amp I was already a massive Queen fan after seeing hearing them for the first time at Live Aid. The red Marlin with maple fretboard was the closest I could get to John Deacon's One Vision Precision Elite. The curly cable, just because Brian May used one. The guitar amp was just because I had no idea at the time that there was a difference between a guitar and bass amp Still a massive Queen fan having just managed to get a hold of the remastered Queen I picture disc Quote
chrisba Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Sit Down by James. I was sitting in a pub watching a couple of mates playing acoustic covers, sitting around a table. The bass player wandered off to get the beers in, and I picked up his bass and asked how to play it. 3 notes later, I knew I had to get one of my own and learn how to play it. The rest, as they say, is his story. 2 Quote
Ed_S Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Pretty sure it was Def Leppard - Animal. It's also the first and only song that I've ever 'learned' using tab instead of just figuring out my own line by ear. The only reason it was that song is that the title starts with 'A', so it was the first one in the list that I knew and there was a bass tab available for. It's not a particular favourite or even a song that I've ever played live in the years since, but it got me started. Quote
asingardenof Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Probably Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis, having borrowed the tab book for Definitely Maybe from a mate at school Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted January 24 Posted January 24 (edited) Black Magic Woman was officially the first proper song I learned . That was with friend who used to give me weekly lessons for a fiver..or an album . However on my own without having much of an idea , I did for some reason nail the track no man's land from the penetrator album by Ted Nugent . I was going through the dopey stage without any confidence etc . It seemed like I was getting something going ,instead of playing the riff to ac/dc sin city so many times .. Bigwan Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Seek and Destroy by Metallica. Not the first riff I learned - that was Another One Bites the Dust - but I'd just been plunking along on various other bits and pieces until getting together with a few school friends to form a band and the first song we learned was Seek and Destroy. Looking back I think we could have started on something easier! Quote
Lozz196 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I’m pretty sure it was I Wanna Be Me by The Sex Pistols 1 Quote

Me too, at my first gig as a dedicated bassist (I played guitar for several years before seeing the light). I remember learning Midnight Hour and a bunch of other tunes (Mustang Sally etc) at the singer/guitarist's house. On the night, he announced the song as 'a Wilson Pickett number' (without mentioning the title) and I didn't know it was by Mr Pickett, so I missed the first few notes as I desperately tried to figure out what was being played. 😀 1 Quote
Bassassin Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Stranglers - Peaches. Had no idea how to tune my bass when I first started playing, so I had to re-learn it once I did. Unsurprisingly, it suddenly made a lot more sense! Went on to learn the entire Rattus Norvegicus album, which on reflection, was a great tutorial & has probably had a long-term influence! 3 Quote

spencer.b Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Green day "When I come Around" off the record and Cream "Badge" from a transcription in bassist magazine ( I could read a bit from playing the trumpet) Both really great inventive lines that taught me loads Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted January 24 Posted January 24 John, I'm Only Dancing. Not because I was a Bowie fan at the time, but because it just happened to be transcribed in Bassist magazine. Thinking back, I learnt to play it before I actually heard the song! Quote
tubbybloke68 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Cherry oh baby, UB40 for me. I remember a feeling of bliss and anticipation. An all new experience at the time. It was wonderful 😊. Quote
