The latest Squier Affinity range are actually excellent machines. I bought a 2024 Affinity Active Jazz V and there was simply nothing wrong with it. I only traded it in because a Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones 5 became available and I don't need two Jazz basses.

So have we reached the conclusion that it’s far cheaper to mass produce instruments in Indonesia and China and that brand recognition tends to make the end product more expensive ?

Yes 

I’m not saying that it is logical but people pay less for a Skoda built with identical parts to a VW so it’s not just fender

Excellent. So something is available for every budget. If the purpose of this thread is to praise the quality of Indonesian and Chinese built instruments then I agree. 

I don’t really agree with the inverse snobbery though. If someone has enough money to buy a custom shop Fender or wants to buy a brand they recognise then fair play.

We know marketing is a dark art but I’ve stood staring at shelves long enough in foreign supermarkets pondering what to buy to realise it came about for a reason.

i don’t have any data to back this up but i would guess that a sizeable chunk of people buying new instruments every year are parents. they possibly know nothing about the instrument they are buying but unless they have been living in a cave have probably heard of fender.

japan was a cheap manufacturing destination 50 years ago, mexico was also very cheap until relatively recently. i would guess that the production of this bass is to make a budget fender to fill the gap in the market left by increasing costs in mexico.

I agree with that but specifically bass purchases is what I'm referring to. If anything I would have thought the higher end boutique gear may intimidate rather than attract scorn but maybe some people do scorn higher end stuff.

i don’t think they scorn the gear just the people buying it. if your a dentist that wants a £4000 custom shop fender for your 30th anniversary and can barely play then there are worse crimes out there.

I understand what you mean. At the end of the day people are free to purchase whatever it is they can afford. It shouldn't really be the business of anybody else. I went to a gig once where the bassist had a Fodera and at best he was an okay player in my opinion. The tone was amazing though. We chatted after the gig,really nice guy and very happy with his purchase.

Plenty of average drivers buy Ferraris, and while they can't drive like Nigel Mansell, the tone is amazing. 😉

Yes, our old producer had a Squier Affinity Telecaster, he had it set up so good that it played and sounded fantastic, I`m sure someone given the guitar with the headstock/logo covered would have thought it was an instrument costing 10 times more.

plenty of people spend hundreds of pounds on sports clothing that have been developed for elite athletes only to shuffle down to maccy d’s.

Car brands have taken Fender's lead in having a budget brand and a luxury brand i.e. Toyota has Lexus, Honda has Infiniti, Hyundai have Genesis. 

 

Make the same guitar, put a 'premium' logo on it and sell it for much more than you budget brand instruments.

 

You'd think that people wouldn't fall for it, but they do.
