Thing is, you can get a custom made bass built for you by a luthier that IS objectively better for half that £4k, which these days is in the territory of a lot of higher-end US mass-manufactured stuff...

Totally agree. I’d pay for someone with a mortgage to make something that only I wanted. No mass manufacture bass is worth north of £1k IMHO

Ah ok fair enough. I wasn't aware of that 👍

Blame Gibson, not yourself! I was also wrong btw, the EB model name had already been used for four different shapes, not three. I forgot the violin shape, silly Gibson me.

The bottom line is it's two pieces of wood bolted together (minus neck thrus obviously) with some electronics added (and nothing mind bogglingly complex) and then some strings attached. I do see where you're coming from 🤔

It’s mostly 1950s tech rather than rocket science

Neck thrus are more complicated, I get that they cost more to make

still 1950s tech - a biblical lifetime ago

would you trust your life to 1950s medicine?

Gibson went through a period of innovation fairly recently that included the infamous robo tuners

My brother sent Gibson a video of his robo-tuners spontaneously unwinding all of the strings on his guitar. It was too unreliable to gig.

EB just stands for 'Electric Bass' the number designates the body shape/pickups.

Yes, but the last two had no number, officially.  The only way to differentiate them is the year of introduction - 2013 and 2017.  Some places add 4 or 5 depending upon how many strings, but that's unofficial.  Plus there already was an EB-4(L).  And of course, Gibson themselves did an EB-6, which designated the number of strings, not the body shape or number of pickups, same name in two different body configs (a six string version of the EB-2 and a six string version of the EB-3).

What a mess!

Yeah but that's a stupid idea to begin with and not really true as with the last two versions the number refers to the amount of strings, for example an EB5 could be either of these:

Yeah it's strange. As Neepheid said it's the year that differentiates them. The Bassbros one I know to be earlier than the Waltons link.

I don't dislike Fender but I've been forced to seek alternative brands. I personally value a flatter radius than what they offer (my understanding is Leo was emulating classical instruments that benefit from smaller radius as they are played with bows) and I like the symmetry of a double octave fretboard also.

Not everyone has the cash to drop on a Fender so why not give people options depending on what they can afford?

Only stated this because many Squiers are close to the £500 price point and to be frank, these new standards seem to be Squiers with a decal. I wonder what price these will gather second hand and if that will affect Squier sales?

Just a thought, but when Fender have brought out something truly different (point headstock, radical body shape, two octave neck, super thin neck, tbx tone control, micro-tilt etc.) no-one bought them.

Penicillin was discovered in 1928? One reason why fewer soldiers died in ww2

insulin was also discovered in the 1920s?

The only reason I bought my fender was because they made something different. This but in sunburst.

Yeah I just realised. What was I thinking? Lol. I've had a hard couple of days. It's late, I'm tired. It won't happen again 😂

Let it be known, I am a bass player first and foremost. Always have been, always will be.

Low end FTW.
