This is a question on behalf of XFR Jr. She's ripped off a finger nail on her fretting hand and has a gig next Friday, hour and a half of energetic rock. Any advice?

XFR hound has ripped off a claw as well and has a cone of shame. I'm unsure whether this will help XFR Jr but may be worth a try.

Never had that myself but should it happen I think a decent sticking plaster and try to avoid using said finger. If bass lines have to be simplified so be it, better to have a tight simple bass than an all over the place in pain one.

A week is a long time and kids heal quickly.

Best advice is not to antagonise it or put too much pressure on it as it heals.

As someone who plays double bass and has quite literally had my fingers bleeding after (and sometimes during) gigs, taking it slow is a good idea.

I suspect super glue is not the answer for the OP, but it most certainly is for Mr BB. Use it as a finger pad coating.

Haha this is years ago when I was first transitioning to DB, and I indeed did use superglue!

It's a long long time since I did that so ny memory could be off.  There could be a chance the pain has settled by next Friday enough that the bandaged finger doesn't complain too much. What did the nurse say?

Let it heal until Friday and then tape it up with micropore for some support pre gig. Playing the gig with a cone of shame is optional.

How much does it hurt her to use the finger for fretting? If she's not using the very tip, it shouldn't be putting too much pressure on the ouch bit.

Coincidentally, I tore the nail on the middle finger of my right hand a week ago, which made plucking with that finger uncomfortable for a few days. OK now though. Average rate of growth is around a tenth of a mm per day (however, mine seems to have grown 2mm in a week).
