There is not one positive thing that's come out of Trump's existence. He's in the process of throwing thousands of people out of work, denying millions healthcare and destroying treaties and pacts around the world. He word, and unfortunately now the word of America, is worth nothing.

If you go back to before he was where he is today (can’t bring myself to say it), he was notorious for bilking contractors, tying them up in lawsuits and basically never paying his suppliers. He’s presided over a litany of failed companies (including a casino - how do you fail at that?). He was a horrendously dishonest businessman whose reputation preceded him. He’s widely hated in NYC, and in Atlantic City, NJ, where his failed casino was.

But he’s obviously surrounded himself with people who know how to sell things. Including divisiveness and hatred.

He's not too popular in fictional small towns in rural Connecticut either...

@Russ wasn’t there a fiasco with a so called Trump university as well? He defrauded a bunch of students and the thing went bust. If I recall correctly, he paid up on a few law suits as a result.

A complete and utter shyster. How was he ever selected for The Apprentice in the US?

Yep. Then there was his airline, a travel business, a vodka business, his mail-order steak company, several charities and a bunch more. Hardly the glittering success story he would have you believe.

And let's not forget his elegantly, in fact almost poetically titled bike race, The Tour de Trump https://www.granfondoguide.com/Contents/Index/1939/tour-de-trump-remembering-donald-trump’s-cycling-race

Unusual to see him among people with worse hair........

I was watching a podcast last night and in their view this tariff nonsense and the BS about Gaza, Panama, Greenland etc is just a smoke screen. Putting 10,000 soldiers on the Mexican border was something Biden had already negotiated!! The media is fixated on the BS and they are missing, or wilfully not reporting, the real issue. . . . Musk and Trump are attempting to steal the US Government. They are trying to shutdown the various federal law enforcement agencies and trying to destroy any opposition within Government. They are trying to put tens of thousands of government workers out of work, have arbitrarily made inoperable various government websites so programs for the poor and needy cannot work. Many of these actions are illegal and against the constitution, but that doesn't seem to be of concern to Musk/Trump. Where cases have been brought, Federal judges are stepping in and have put a hold on these actions, but a Trump lawyer has just told a Federal judge that it is irrelevant if actions are illegal or against the constitution when  Musk/Trump have ordered them!!! This isn't being reported in the media and is a far more serious situation that any pseudo trade war.

There's a lot on TicTok about this. For all its faults it is uncensored. Obviously careful which bits are bot accounts and deliberate misinformation but there's a lot of News channels streaming live Congress and 'doorstepping' of representatives on their way to meetings.

Some of it is being reported on in the UK.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/feb/05/musk-doge-takeover-usaid

Looking at the Wall Street Journal, its former unqualified grovelling to Trump seems to have rather dropped off.

To add to the chaos, the State Department has announced that US government ships will be able to use the Panama Canal free of charge, but Panama says that's not true.

Nope. It's because we don't understand the 4D chess game Trump is playing. He's far smarter than us mortals and only his supporters can comprehend his greatness

(according to replies on X to various posts condemning his actions. Honestly, it's really worrying to read these comments).

The bigger the BS he comes out with, the bigger the thing he's trying to deflect from.

I wouldn't care to raise children here, either. Good luck with your plans as they develop.

I think the kids would get a better education in the UK, but yes, I have concerns about what's going on back over there right now too. It's all getting a bit "stabby". And I'm kinda worried about the rise of Reform and that things could end up going the same way over there that they have done here.

Ireland is another option for us - I have a lot of family there (more than I have in the UK), and we've lived there before so we know it pretty well. The housing crisis over there is worrying though - property in anywhere we might actually want to live is insanely expensive, and there's not much available.

Also, from my perspective, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot going on as far as music goes. Yes, I could join any number of cover or trad bands, but I still want to play metal originals! I have no idea where you would even look for bands/musicians over there now. The Musicians Wanted forum on Boards.ie was always the place to look back in the day, but it's pretty dead on there these days.

It's still safer compared to somewhere that is very "shooty".

On the other hand, I've heard Croydon is on the up.

I've still got friends living there. Not that the place was ever particularly great, but it's a proper dump these days. Seriously stabby, all the live music venues have closed, the high street is a shadow of its former self, the council is utterly useless, and, because it's 15 minutes on the train into London, it's still really expensive. They've spent the past few years building loads of commuter flats around East Croydon Station, and I'd hoped this influx of new people would help the town up its game a bit. But nope.

There's a great gig, The Oval Tavern, in East Croydon. It's worth coming back just for that!

The Oval's great for blues, jazz and acoustic music. I know the place well - they also used to do a kids' storytime session on Saturday mornings and I was there with the kids most weeks when we lived back there. Decent beer and food, and a lovely garden. I know Esther (who runs it) pretty well, she used to run The Ship.

You used to have places like the Cartoon and the Black Sheep Bar where new bands could get gigs, and where you could have a good night out, and they're all gone now.

I haven't been back to the UK since 2022, and that was only the second visit in five years, but I certainly found the place a lot more openly sour about things that the British had previously at least pretended to keep in check. I don't think the most poisonous aspects of social media respect geographic and cultural boundaries.

Ireland would almost certainly be higher than the UK on my list if I planned to leave the US, but it is all down to personal circumstances. I have no plans to leave New York, however.

I really don’t like paper straws - I bought some plastic ones.
