Hi Guys,

Just had my first dive into the world of fretless and got one of these little bargains

A HARLEY BENTON HBB400FLTBK.

Any suggestions for string type. I've heard nylon strings are good but i've never tried them..also someone suggested stearing clear of roundwounds as they can chew up your fretboard

Theres no reason you cannot use roundwounds on it but they do appear to be more corrosive on softer fretboards. Flatties are the weapon of choice for most fretless. As to your preferance of maker/ guage etc.

My advice FWIW is stick with a brand/ guage you use or know and go for thier flatties to start.

Roundwounds do chew up softer fretboards, but some folks really need that sound. I remember Pino Palladino talking about getting his Stingray fretboard redressed at regular intervals, during the 80s when acts like Tears For Fears and Don Henley called him specifically for his fretless sound. Jaco had boat epoxy on his fretboard for this, which might have helped him.

leave the existing strings on until you've got your act together playing wise and really know what you want...
try to have a play with other peoples fretless basses to get a feel for the different types...

playing around with different brands/gauges of flatwounds can get expensive... but once you found a set you like, they last far longer (that is unless you really have to have the "new" sound...)
