Trace advised the SMX preamp as putting out enough at '4' to fully drive an amplifier. They provided extra gain in case a low sensitivity amp was encountered. Turning it past 4 won't get any more out of a Trace amp.

I'd forgotten how heavy old Trace gear was. I was in my local music shop the other day and they had an old BLX-80 sitting there. I always remembered those being louder and bassier than they had any right to be. Then I went to move it so I could plug it in... holy crap. The thing weighed more than my Barefaced BT2, and it's only a 1x10".

 

They do still sound great though. :D

Played through these two Trace Cabs on Sunday (2103x &  1153) - I only ever move them about two feet to the right to get them out of the way when we finish playing though. Sound awesome especially with the Aguillar head.
