Hi, I'd like to put a small bevel on my p and j pickups to make them more comfortable. El cheapo pickups in my squier are very uncomfortable to rest a thumb on, or catch when thrashing with a plectrum.

Has anyone done this, and if so what did you use to bevel them? Am thinking a small block with some sandpaper but not sure what grit?

Thanks in advance.

Most of the covers are made of GBP (good black plastic), use any file or sandpaper. Glossy surface requires very fine paper and some polishing, if necessary. Matt is most likely OK.

You won't need to take a lot off, so (this is just a finger in the air guesstimate) maybe 240 or 280 grit to make the basic shaping, then if you want it shiny again, you're going to have to work up the grits to 400, 1000, 2000 etc. then polishing with some kind of compound.  Or leave it dull if function is more important to you than form.

Someone will probably be along shortly to say that 240/280 is way too coarse.  Hey, at least I didn't say 80! :D

This sounds mad, but it works. Get a smoothish carpet tile (or small strip of carpet) and swipe the plastic hard and fast across it in single swipes, it takes the sharp edges off and removes hardly any material and doesn't turn matt. You can repeat as many times as you need. When I was young and poor I used to do this to old guitar picks to get a bit more life out of them.
