Agent 00Soul Posted February 11 Posted February 11 (edited) I just checked Google Maps and they renamed the Gulf Of Mexico into the Gulf Of America. Apple Maps is still calling it Gulf Of Mexico. Why are these so-called disruptors in Silicon Valley suddenly listening to the whims of a political leader? They never have before. Edited February 11 by Agent 00Soul Topic was all uppercase so I corrected it. 2
fretmeister Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Because this particular leader has a revenge list and is happy to use it instead of being an actual statesman. 4
Agent 00Soul Posted February 11 Author Posted February 11 For the past 15 years governments have been telling these people to regulate themselves and they just laugh. Trump says something ridiculous and they implement it instantly. This sets a very dangerous precedent. It’s also symbolic of the sort of things the rest of the world is going to need to gird its loins and resist. Companies like Google are relied upon the world over so they are surely hoping that if they make enough changes to fit Trumptopia, the international community will have no choice but to gradually accept it, especially as an entire generation comes of age with this kind of thing so they are used to it. 2

asingardenof Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Mine says Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America), which seems to be the case in a lot of countries 1

Lozz196 Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I look at this in the same way as Marathons, someone may have rebranded them but to me they’ll always be Marathons, Gulf of Mexico will always be that no matter what anyone else calls it. 3
Agent 00Soul Posted February 11 Author Posted February 11 Maybe they were testing to see if there would be some kind of backlash? It’s still awful precedent. Who knows where it will lead? Are whole areas going to be forced to build some kind of “great firewall” to keep this kind of thing out?
pete.young Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Bad news for skiffle fans. "Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of America" doesn't scan. 1

Happy Jack Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I thought it was going to be The Gulf Of Fentanyl? Oh well, now waiting for Trump to annexe the Sudetenland. 1

Oh well, now waiting for Trump to annexe the Sudetenland. Yeah, let's move that up about 85 years. He's planning to get Canada first, things are tense here these days with the new tariffs announced yesterday. Can you say "loose cannon"? Very scary. For the last few weeks a number of groups here have started "Buy Canadian" campaigns, not sure how much good it will do but at least it feels good to NOT buy products from the USA. Many Canadians who spend the winter in the southern part of the USA are rethinking their plans, partly due to the tariffs and politics and made more serious by a very weak Canadian dollar compared to the American dollar. 😟 Edited February 11 by Staggering on 1

chris_b Posted February 11 Posted February 11 The French don't call it the English Channel but that doesn’t seem to be an issue, so if everyone calls it the Gulf of Mexico, that's what it is.
