Does anyone remember this place? I found out about it from an article in Bassist Magazine in the mid 90's.

It was a specialist bass guitar shop, and one of its main draws for me was it's 'wall of Wals'.

At the time, they were around £1500 - £2000 each (if my memory serves me well), and I went with the intention of getting one.

However, one of the main guys at The Embassy suggested talking to a new local young bass builder who could make me a bespoke bass for the same price (enter one John Shuker).

The rest is history, as I've now had three basses from him (still got two of them).  One part of me wishes I'd still got a Wal, but at the prices they are commanding now, I wouldn't dare take it out on a Friday or Saturday night anymore!!!!!

Wow, I'm from Mansfield

I guess this was back in the day, because I've never heard of it, probably because I didn't start playing until 2002.

Oh man, that would have been useful haha

Yes I remember it. David Shields and John Vannerman ran it and did indeed have a Wall of Wals. Many years ago (April '98)I'd somehow found out that John was selling his matching pair of fretted / fretless 5 string Wals he'd had made and he was asking somewhere between £1500 and £2k for the pair! The next weekend I travelled down from Huddersfield with the intent to buy them.....but they had been snatched up just before I got there. I do remember John showing me a pair of Sei fretted / fretless 5 strings (never heard of Sei at that time) but I ended up trading my Pre EB MM Sabre in for a JD Calibas my gateway drug into 5 strings! 🤣

Remember it. The seemingly monthly picture of the Wall of Wals in Guitarist magazine was always worth a drool! They had an early association with Jon Shuker too as I recall...

They did indeed! That's where I was introduced to him and ordered my first custom bass from him 😁👍

Weirdly I just googled this shop and found this thread plus another from 2007 about it Doctorbass started. Reason being I had the neck off my stingray earlier and found a gold sticker with the address etc for the shop on the heel of the neck, I'd never heard of it prior though. Another good place long gone by the sound of it . 🤔
