I'm looking at getting a TC MojoMojo (anyone selling?) and would like to get an idea of how big the gain jump is from the Spark Booster to the Mojo.

TLDR: How much more gain does the Mojo have over the Spark Booster?

Posted

Think of it as spark at 12 o clock is the mojo at 9 o clock

There was a tonal difference though which I didn’t expect, I love the mojo but the spark was really boring and flat sounding.

Did somebody say "graphs"? No? Well you're getting them anyway, because I happen to have both pedals to hand.

Green: Spark / Mode "Clean" / Gain 0% / Bass & Treble 50%
Red: MojoMojo / Voice "Up" / Drive 0% / Bass & Treble 50%

The MojoMojo is inherently dark-sounding, and cranking the highs is only going to get you close to flat at best. It gets a bit more mid-focused than the Spark as you increase the gain. I'll see if I can get some sound samples later.

Edit: Apologies to anyone with colourblindess - I should have picked something other than red/green. Basically, whichever line has less treble is always the MojoMojo

I don't have any experience with the Spark, but as a former owner of the Mojomojo, I say it's a great OD pedal, very useable on bass despite its billing as a "guitar" pedal.  I had it as my main OD for years and only changed because of pedalboard consolidation (got a Joyo Monomyth which combines OD, EQ and DI in one package).

You seem like the person to ask for this, what does the voice switch do? The manual seems wrong.

Very little 🤣

I have an old image from when I looked into this a while back. Dark green is voice switch "up", light green is "down":

So something like a 1.5dB boost centred around 80-100Hz. You can barely hear the difference.

Don't understand the Spark hate? It's supposed to be neutral sounding?

No hate, was just surprised at the tonal differences as I was just expecting a lower gain pedal.

its worth mentioning for the OP because the mojo is cheaper (second hand) and if your favour that flavour it’s a no brainer.

Dry recording (no pedal):

Spark / Mode "Clean" / Gain 100%:

MojoMojo / Drive 0%:

MojoMojo / Drive 50%:

MojoMojo / Drive 100%:

Spark at 100% and Mojo at 50% both sound great, mojo at 25-30% i reckon would sound the best

That’s how I would run it.

That was why I got the spark to try and get more range in the 25/50 range of the mojo. But as we see in the graphs, they sound different

The Spark at 100% Gain and the MojoMojo at 25-30% Drive sound pretty close, if you tweak the EQ on the MojoMojo a bit. The Spark is slightly less compressed.

Spark / Mode "Clean" / Gain 5:00 (max) / Bass & Treble 12:00 (flat)

MojoMojo / Voice "Up" / Drive 10:30 / Bass 1:00 / Treble 4:15

Spark (settings as above)

MojoMojo (settings as above)

If you approach it the other way around, flat EQ on the MojoMojo at 25-50% Drive is roughly equivalent to Bass 11:00, Treble 8:30 on the Spark at 100% Gain. It's not quite as close this way - the MojoMojo has a little more going on between 500Hz-3kHz, and a little less > 3kHz.

My problem is I’d go to my default amp settings so bass at 2-3o clock and treble at 9-10o clock.

Becomes a very different gain structure then 😅

I should really have one of these sat around
