Boodang Posted February 14 Posted February 14 Valentine's gig with our punk band tonight, we billed it as 'my punk valentine', don't know why, just sounded good! Anyway, great gig, lots of energy and the audience were really into it. Afterwards, I'd been asked to put on my 'funk/groove' playlist to see out the night... after a while someone came up to me and asked if we could put on something that they could dance to, James Brown was playing. I looked quizzically at them as to be honest if you can't dance to that then you have a neurological issue. In the end I handed them my phone and let them search Spotify for what they wanted. They typed in hip hop... nothing they liked as they all had sampled James Brown beats... they typed in hip hop remix and got the result they wanted which is apparently hip-hop with the James Brown beats replaced with duff duff rhythms (if you could call it rhythm)... depressing! Modern generation (am I being age-ist?!) can't dance to James Brown.. very sad. Quote
Downunderwonder Posted February 14 Posted February 14 "Get on up, get on up, like a...".... or not. Put me in the neurodiverse group. 1 Quote

TimR Posted February 15 Posted February 15 I played with a 'drummer' who couldn't dance. He wasn't a very good drummer either. Quote

Beedster Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Apparently when I play DB I look like i'm dancing with a beautiful woman (comment from more than one audience member). However, when I actually dance with a beautiful woman I tend to look like I'm misusing a piece of agricultural machinery. Dancing is a complete mystery to me 1 2 Quote

Boodang Posted February 15 Author Posted February 15 I think for me it was the realisation last night that the modern generation have been brain washed into thinking the only thing that has groove is a duff duff beat. I think they have a case for suing the music industry for nurelogical damage! Quote

EssentialTension Posted February 15 Posted February 15 I used to be able to dance, even to James Brown, although my main influences as a dancer were Ray Charles and Leslie Phillips. Quote
chris_b Posted February 15 Posted February 15 My wife still laughs about my dance moves from the 70's!! Strange, cos I'm certain they were the height of cool. Quote
chris_b Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Other normal stuff people can't do. . . . We've been asked to put digital clocks up during University exams. . . . because many students can't read the time from traditional clocks!!! Sounds like something is missing in their education. 1 Quote

Leonard Smalls Posted February 15 Posted February 15 I remember when I used to DJ at Leeds University back in the 80s... I played almost exclusively, funk, rare groove, electro and funky disco. I rarely had an empty dancefloor, folks were happy to get down to James Brown, Parliament, Fatback, Jonzunb Crew, Mean Machine, Trouble Funk... But once a guy came up and asked if I had any dance music. I asked what he meant by that and he said "something like The Virgin Prunes" (this was Goth Central in 1984ish!). And amazingly, I had Pagan Lovesong on 7". So I put it on, the dancefloor emptied and Me-laddo wobbled about on his own for a bit. Quote

When I played bass for a ceilidh band for which Mrs Zero was the caller, she would occasionally (and sadistically) call on me to assist with demonstrating a dance. I could just about manage Strip the Willow ("Shut up, Willow Jenkins!") but it wasn't pretty. TBH, my moving about while wearing a bass is quite suspect. Quote
Terry M. Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Actually based on current dance trends amongst young people in Africa,in particular South Africa,I'm betting those kids would know what to do with a James Brown tune on the dancefloor. So maybe not entirely a generational thing. Quote

nekomatic Posted February 15 Posted February 15 I am definitely not one of life’s natural dancers but some years ago I went along to a salsa class for something to do and discovered it is quite possible to learn. Quote

(A historical anomaly, lots of whirring, and rarely plugged in nowadays). I once signed up for a workplace session of 5 Salsa classes, and paid up-front. I was so dreadful, that I shimied out during the first session, and when they offered a refund, I let them keep it (watching me, they had suffered enough). 1 Quote
