Tripod or A-frame guitar stand?

Looking for a cheap stand. Would it be better to go with an A frame or tripod type of stand?

I wouldn't use "cheap" on my bass! I use a Genesis GS-100 stand.

Not cheap (I agree with Chris_, but I use this one myself on a Jazz type with even more pronounced offset.

Basically with a Jazz you're beter off with the hanging type stands.

well..if I had your basses I would go with the best I could afford but not being the case, i just want something cheap to hold my MIM jazz during rehearsals when I go for a cigarette break

Sure. I didn't have a stand at all for the first 20 years! Maybe you could get a good one cheap off Ebay?

That's what I'm thinking about, they're about £10-12 the cheapest ones that is...just don't know if I should go with the tripod or A frame?!?

I've been delighted with it-takes up very little space, lightweight, and seems perfectly stable. I've also got a TGI A-frame job, which is also fine.

Personally I'd rather not have a stand than the really cheap ones.. I've seen too many things fall off them!
Without a stand you tend to take more care propping the bass up or pop it back in a case.
Even a MIM Jazz is best part of half a grand these days!

A-frame stands aren't always suitable for basses with certain finishes, Nitrocellulose for example, as the two don't really get on well when they come into contact (that's the scientific explanation I can assure you)

FWIW I have one of the Hercules tripods that grab the guitar by the neck/headstock, and it's given me many years of trusted use so far. Folds away quite small too so it's very portable.

I got mine yesterday!! the same model...went with a better piece of gear after all ...and I'm glad I did, these hercules are top notch!

+1000000 for Hercules - also the foam padding on them is guaranteed to be nitro friendly - apparently. I can't say I've had a problem with any of my nitro finished guitars (Gibsons mainly) but have had a couple of guitars that had been left on rubber coated stands by their previous owners and it had knackered the finish at the contact points with the stand.
