Permanent Waves is one of those albums I really like but want to really love. Funny thing is that Jacob’s Ladder and Natural Science have never grabbed me as much as “the algorithm” of my musical taste says they should. Yes, Side 2, they're obviously good songs, but I just never thought they were quite up to the same standard as Side 1. I went off them a bit after Signals, then by Hold Your Fire I lost interest (still saw them on the HYF tour though). It wasn't until Vapour Trails that I thought they'd recaptured their spark, through to Clockwork Angels. Even in the synth years, their sound was commercial, but the lyrics were always thought provoking. 1 Quote
Steve Browning Posted Monday at 07:47 Posted Monday at 07:47 I'm not a huge fan of the music, but it's a band I'd loved to have been in. The non-playing videos that demonstrate their friendship and camaraderie are a joy to watch. 3 Quote

I like Power Windows and Counterparts a lot. I never got into Snakes And Arrows. Their only bad album for me was Feedback. I'll probably sit down and have a listen to Roll The Bones, Test For Echo, Presto, and Hold Your Fire (I just checked out the video of Time Stand Still, which is very 80s and for some reason has Aimee Mann on it). 2 Quote

Rich Posted Monday at 11:43 Posted Monday at 11:43 Possibly an unpopular opinion here, but Power Windows is my favourite Rush album. The trio of Manhattan Project / Marathon / Territories is still my favourite three song run from any album ever. 2 Quote

Used to listen to it on my Sony Walkman on the way from York To Ripon college campus in the college minibus on a Friday morning.......😉🤘 1 Quote

Do prefer the later 70s stuff primarily though 1 Quote

My interest in Rush lasted a little over 72 hours, from when as an impressionable 15 year old I saw the gear porn cover of "All the World's a Stage" on Saturday afternoon in my local record shop, until the Tuesday when I got back from school, roughly 5 minutes after I had dropped the needle on side one my borrowed copy of 2112. No matter how much I liked the music I couldn't get past the vocals. I listened all the way through both sides just in case there were songs with more "conventional" singing on them. It wasn't a pleasant experience. From time to time I go back and listen to the occasional track, but my opinion hasn't changed and I still can't get past the vocals. I don't get on with Muse for much the same reasons. Quote

thodrik Posted Monday at 15:36 Posted Monday at 15:36 Brilliant musicians, generally considered 'good guys' of the industry, really appreciate some of the humour and their longevity and continued cultural relevance over a long career has to be respected. I even bought Geddy Lee's book which is great. I just don't really enjoy the music. I completely understand why people like it, but it isn't for me personally, even though I love lots of bands who are influenced by Rush. 1 Quote

Absolutely can't watch that - the earlier videos or live stuff is good, but as a fan of Rush since I first heard 2112 in 1980 (and bought Moving pictures at HMV the day it came out) I couldn't listen to them live for the last few decades, the singing is not something I can deal with. Don't forget to listen to 2112 if you like caress of steel. 1 Quote

As it happens one of my top 5 fave Rush tunes, one of my all time fave songs… doesn’t make that video effects production values any less naff. Quote

wateroftyne Posted Monday at 23:25 Posted Monday at 23:25 I adore them. IMO - unfortunately - the albums started to tank around the time of Presto, after which the songwriting slowly gave way to assembling riffs on Protools. But still.. did I say I adore them? Because I do. Quote
prowla Posted Tuesday at 08:16 Posted Tuesday at 08:16 I listened to Power Windows yesterday evening - it's a good 'un! In common with a lot of 80s digital recordings, the sound isn't so great though. Quote

wateroftyne Posted Tuesday at 08:53 Posted Tuesday at 08:53 I can’t bear the production on Clockwork Angels. That’s opinions for ya! They actually wanted Trevor Horn to produce Power Windows - that’s how they ended up with Anne Dudley arranging the strings. Big fan of Drama here, btw. I think he does a great job on the vocals. Fly From Here - Return Flight, too. Live in 1980 though? Not so much of a fan. Not his fault, tho. 1 Quote
