jeffjohnson Posted February 15 Posted February 15 Musicman stingray for sale locally, says that the neck was replaced with a USA neck but that's why no decal, I'm dubious for obvious reasons, what do you guys think? Quote

neepheid Posted February 16 Posted February 16 They're going to have a hard time selling that. It just looks knockoff to me. Also, have they ever heard of staging a photo? Sure, I'll come pick this bass up from you, even if I don't get stabbed I will probably contract ebola or something. Bloody hell! 1 Quote
Belka Posted February 16 Posted February 16 The presentation is awful but it could be real. It has the compensated nut thing that Sterlings/Subs don't have, and everything else looks right apart from the lack of a decal. A look at the tuners on the back would help in identifying it more. Quote

I've asked for more pictures, it's been up for ages and the price keeps dropping Quote
Burns-bass Posted February 16 Posted February 16 Personally, if it appears too good to be true, it pretty much always is. There are vultures who circle Facebook looking for deals and if they’ve not jumped on it, ask yourself why. Why on earth would you remove a decal? It’s just BS. Personally I wouldn’t waste the time or effort on it. I’d never be happy with a bass with dodgy provenance and you won’t sell it for much either. 2 Quote
AndyTravis Posted February 16 Posted February 16 (edited) Unless… issue with the neck, spare neck found to replace but had another finish on it (white/blue, whatever) and the finish was sanded off. It is, as someone has already said, possibly a SUB neck (black paint)…but it is a MM neck. The serial Number will be on the neck plate on this - so missing decal isn’t like a sanded off serial number (there may be a sticker on the heel area with a different SN) - the body finish is trans purple (think it was called that anyhow) Could all be legit. But take a big mate. Depends on the price etc. Edited February 16 by AndyTravis Quote

If you can find it it will tell you the date it was made, model and colour, so you'd have a pretty good idea of how original the body is at least. Perhaps also some replacement necks come without a decal as they could be for multiple models; StingRay, Cutlass, Sabre, etc. Definitely needs more better/photos to make any informed decision. Quote

On the bigger bridges until about 96 ish. Once the necks went to 6 bolt - they were on the neck plate. I can’t remember on the 5’s - haven’t owned one for a few years… Quote
