Doffs cap and kowtows into the gentlepersons' lounge that is the EUB and Double-Bass section...

I'd quite like a drop D tuner on my Stagg EUB. I know the tuners are basically the same ones as on a P bass, but with slightly different posts. I wonder if anyone has found the best Hipshot Xtender model to use, even if it involves some part-swapping? Is there one that will fit?

I've seen the 5-string Stagg conversation thread from a few years ago btw. Also the rather lovely 5-string NS in the classifieds. Both are a bit beyond my budget though.

Take one out, measure it and go to the Hipshot website, their fitting instructions often have a dimensions schematic. Conversely, drop them an email, I’ve found them to be super helpful in the past.

They definitely are. I've emailed them a few times and they're always on it.
Almost like they value your custom!

Alternatively, if your EUB has a traditional Double Bass style bridge, they do the 'Free Range' DB Xtender

I don't think it is as I used 'real' DB strings on mine when I had it.

If that’s the case a drop D tuner won’t release enough string to lower the tone to D, would it?

Good point and one that I hadn't considered. It's 3/4 scale bass, but I don't know if that is a standard measurement 🤷‍♂️

I looked at trying out fitting one of my extenders from an EB (lightweight Hipshot) in my NS WAV4 to see if it would go down to D, when I realised that, even if a standard length post would fit, the extender would have to be a “left handed” one (or at least one that fits the lower side of an EB headstock. So I can’t try that.

Ooh I like that! Would be great for when we add a middle 8 of Kashmir into another song. But at that price for 16 bars in one song, I think I’ll continue playing it an octave higher 😂
