A little bit of a disapointment

I had a little bit of disapointment when ordering at 2006 Ibanez GWB1005 Sugi guitars 5 string fretless. The point was it was supposed to be fingerboard made from ebony, but my version was made from ebonol. Do You think it's acceptable?

I had a Squier Deluxe Active Jazz V with an ebonol fingerboard and really liked it. Not sure that helps. Can I assume you haven't received the bass yet?

I can get the disappointment, but it looks like you knew this before ordering!

Mine was ordered 2006 and recieved too. I didn't know about ebonol.

So you've had it 19 years and now you're worrying about the fingerboard, or have I missed something?

Happy belated NBD I guess! 

Ebonol is great. Very solid and durable, and it requires very little maintenance. The phenolic resin fingerboards on my Status basses are basically the same material, and they're around €4000 for a new one - so I definitely wouldn't discount it as an "inferior" material to wood. I think it's great for use on a fretless.

My psysics from china town has changed. Now my 1rst gun is Yamaha trb 5P II. So it's allright, no worries.

I thought you meant it was a 2006 bass rather than you ordered it in 2006.

Certainly Ibanez themselves say it's ebony. How do you know it's ebanol instead?

I hesitate to state this, but might they be mistaken. I find it hard to believe that a company like Ibanez would be guilty of misrepresentation.

I’m absolutely sure that the 1005 is a way more superior bass to the GWB35, but I can remember when I had one, I was really unimpressed with it. Generally feeling a bit cheap and overpriced. Half the fret lines popped out of the ebanol, and I had to get a luthier to re-glue them all back in. That’s my only experience of the stuff.

I guess that like any material, it's only as good as the person or machine that did the building. I had an ebanol boarded fretless and it was like playing glass, felt way better than most of my wooden boarded basses and very similar to s Status Graphite fretless neck I had at the time. And that's about as good a comparison as you'll get I think

Whereas mine was absolutely fine, construction wise. I wasn’t keen on the way it went gray/white in places where the strings rubbed, however. Felt great to play as @Beedster mentioned. I stripped mine as I didn’t like the stealth black, which revealed some very average basswood, with a great big knot in it (none of which affected the sound), still looked pretty cool though.
