The one time it got close, some idiot wouldn't stop bothering my girlfriend (now wife). In the end, me and my mates dragged him behind the pub and stole his clothes instead of beating him up. Or maybe they were just an unrepresentative bunch, but most weekends someone would end up in a ruck of some description, and it was a range of ages and backgrounds and often not with outsiders but within the group. I was never involved but it just seemed like there were quite a few hair triggers. Lots of amphetamine may not have helped matters. Then I became a raver for a few years so it was a very different scene and then moved abroad so lost touch with them all. I have known plenty of lovely metallers so certainly not going to make any assumptions about there being a connection. Just personal experience.... Quote

RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Mmm.. I think of nerd bass as something more complicated , Steve Bailey or Michael Manring territory. Mainly 6 strings , fretless , lots of wood like Zon or Warwick . Micheal manring is a genius , but his playing in front of live audiences is extroadinary. He seems to keep adjusting the tuning every few seconds . You'd expect somebody to shout out "leave it alone ". Having said that , I wish I had the chance to see him . Quote

MichaelDean Posted February 23 Posted February 23 My brother wanted some help choosing a bass for his daughter today after she got assigned bass in Rock Club (came away with a Bronco in Coral that played very nicely), and then I got distracted by Jazz basses due to this thread. SteveXFR Posted February 23 Posted February 23 I almost forgot, I bought my daughter a MIN Jazz bass for Christmas. As a music student she should be nerdy BUT she doesn't even like prog or jazz. She's in alt rock, shoegaze and punk bands but I think only uses the jazz bass for the shoegaze band and that's definitely neither cool or nerdy. Quote

Beer of the Bass Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Thinking about it, the only bass I've owned that I felt self-conciously nerdy gigging with was a DeArmond Ashbory. Something about strapping on this tiny, goofy looking bright blue bass with rubber strings, with my little bottle of baby powder sat on top of my amp to stop the strings from sticking to me! 2 Quote
