TheGreek Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Reports that Roberta Flack has passed away aged 88. Another loss of a soul giant. Here 1 1 Quote
chris_b Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Sad news. Beautiful voice. She launched the careers of Luther Vandross and Marcus Miller by firing them from her band. She told them they should be running their own bands and being successful in their own right. 3 Quote
Terry M. Posted February 24 Posted February 24 (edited) 88 keys on a piano for each year she spent on earth. RIP legend 🙏 Edited February 24 by Terry M. 2 Quote

Here Very, very sad to hear this news.. 😞 Such a talented musician with one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life. Her performances and versions of 'Killing Me Softly' and 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' will never be equalled or bettered IMHO. RIP. 6 Quote
LeftyP Posted Tuesday at 16:44 Posted Tuesday at 16:44 Funny that Ewan Maccoll, who wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" hated every version of it! He wrote it for Peggy Seeger who became his third wife and she told me the tale which is confirmed on Wikipedia. MacColl made no secret of the fact that he disliked all of the cover versions of the song. His daughter-in-law wrote: "He hated all of them. He had a special section in his record collection for them, entitled 'The Chamber of Horrors'. He said that the Elvis version was like Romeo at the bottom of the Post Office Tower singing up to Juliet. The other versions, he thought, were travesties: bludgeoning, histrionic, and lacking in grace."[6] Quote

chris_b Posted Tuesday at 17:17 Posted Tuesday at 17:17 Sorry Ewan, but Roberta's version beats yours hands down. 4 Quote
tauzero Posted Tuesday at 17:52 Posted Tuesday at 17:52 Just tried to listen to the Peggy Seeger original. Managed 51 seconds. The phrasing on the Elvis version is weird. 1 Quote
Terry M. Posted Tuesday at 18:21 Posted Tuesday at 18:21 Interesting that he hated all copies of the song yet had space in his record collection for them. I mean if they were that bad then... Quote
KingPrawn Posted Tuesday at 18:46 Posted Tuesday at 18:46 RIP As a kid i used to go to the main Libary in Birmingham. You could lend out cassettes. I remeber listening to 'First Take' in mid 85 for the first time. Her voice was one of the most incredible voices ive ever had the privilage to hear. Incredible musician 1 Quote
