The "white" names tend to lend themselves to acoustic folk bands, so Dulux white gives us Rock Salt, Timeless, Porcelain Doll, Summer Linen, Vintage Chandelier, Letters Unread, Feather Flock, Celtic Cream. Green is more varied. Try prog Rock band Sophisticated Sage, girl-punk-band Overtly Olive, Bardcore covers band Antique Map, High School band Valley Rock. The variety is very wide - and I am amused by the idea that there are people who are professional Paint Namers. 1 Quote
prowla Posted March 12 Posted March 12 As an aside, I watched Mortimer & Whitehouse; they were discussing some random topic and Bob Mortimer came up with the comment "water isn't sentient". Quote

The repetition and endless recycling is supposed to be in the spirit of dreary pub-rock bands and is kinda the whole point - its purpose is very different to your generator, which could potentially actually be useful! 😁 Edited March 16 by paulbuzz Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Apologies, I wasn't intending to do a downer on it, I thought the list of source words was very interesting, and you seem to have collected all the pub rock cliche words. 1 Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted March 16 Posted March 16 The easiest Band Name Generator is for Southern Rock. The basic algorithm is "Black" + <noun>. Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 My 'Band Name Generator' is now up & running on its own domain: https://bandname.uk My two source lists currently have just over 17000 words in total, with a theoretical 130 million combinations. The original lists were just under double the current size and It is likely that I'll reduce the number of words further in the future to improve the quality of the generated names. 1 1 Quote

I've not been able to reproduce this on Safari MacOS 18.3.1, or whatever versions are on my phone & iPad, but I have added some additional header info into the page which might help. Can you do a hard reload of the page and see whether it is any better now? Edited March 16 by Jean-Luc Pickguard Quote

LowB_FTW Posted March 16 Posted March 16 (edited) It still errors on Safari (it is an old version though) I have just tried in the latest Firefox and it worked as expected, so I'd likely put this down to my version of Safari on this Mac - which itself is old, I'll try my iMac later, I'm not expecting any issues there TBH. Stub Mandrel Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Certainly good for a laugh! Satins Pores (which I read as Satan's Pores..) would make an interesting pairing with Bitch Biblist. I can anticipate some controversial combinations, rearranging some of the examples I was given! Perhaps remove the odd word from the list (e.g. 'migrant' could get paired with various words to upset people on all shades of the political spectrum!) Finally, "Greek Ajax" - quite an accurate pairing! Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 Thanks, I've kept several *unsavoury* words in for comic effect, but I've zapped 'migrant' now as can carry a bit of 'daily express' baggage. I'll probably do another sweep of the word lists at some point to tighten them up further 1 Quote

I'll probably do another sweep of the word lists at some point to tighten them up further Haha! It's an unavoidable feature of random generators, I think. After all, unexpectedly striking combinations are pretty much the goal. Even with the super-limited wordlist in the pubrock band name generator, a few questionable suggestions do pop up occasionally. Safe to say I don't think I'll be auditioning for The White Vigilantes any time soon. 😮 Jean-Luc, how have you been weeding the word lists for your generator? Surely not by hand? Edited March 16 by paulbuzz Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 (edited) I made an edit page that lists the words contained in the txt file in a huge form on the screen with a delete button next to each, plus a floating bit at the top with controls - a dropdown to select the txt file to edit, a dropdown to instantly jump to the words with a specific initial letter, an undo button (to reverse accidental deletions) and a save button to commmit the changes. It was designed to work best on my iPhone and anytime I'm half watching TV or listening to music I can go through a bit of one of the lists very easily. Its a bit like Macro Data Refinement — sometimes a word just 'feels' like it should be removed or kept. Edited March 17 by Jean-Luc Pickguard 1 Quote
