I’m not really a drummer, but I dabble. There used to be a fabulous drum shop not far from me called Chas Hoopers. I swear you’ve never seen anything like it. It was in a tiny village high in the moors on the outskirts of Blackburn, Lancashire. Think Edward and Tubbs’ shop from The League of Gentlemen and you’re not far off. Although not a big shop, it was an absolute treasure trove. Chas was a nice enough chap, but a bit tight. There were no bargains to be had. One day, about 25 years ago I went in and he had this pair of second hand Paiste 2002 hi-hats which he wanted about five million pounds for. I was a student at the time. Needless to say I didn’t buy them, but the sound really stuck with me. They were far and away the best hi-hats I’d ever heard. Kind of dry sounding and well suited to the jazz and funk stuff I was into, although the 2002s seem to be marketed as a rock cymbal. I eventually got myself a pair at a more sensible price. Screw you Chas Hooper.

I don’t really have time to drum anymore and I could do with releasing the cash Ive got locked up in my various bits of drum gear, so here they are. Made in Switzerland in 1982, to say they have patina would be an understatement. I haven’t cleaned them, although it would be possible to get them looking, not new but pretty darn good. I’ve seen it done. Also, I know that cleaning old cymbals is a no-no in certain drum circles. They have no keyholes or cracks.

I will also include a bottle of the elusive Paiste cymbal polish. It would be pointless using it now, but if you were to clean them properly they would need a coat of this stuff to prevent them from tarnishing again rapidly. This has to do with the make-up of the bronze alloy that Paiste use for the 2002s and most of their other cymbals. When you buy a new set, they are coated with this stuff. They’ve stopped selling said polish to Joe Public for some reason and I’ve seen bottles changing hands for ridiculous prices. I think it used to cost about a tenner. Anyway, I’ve got a full bottle and will chuck it in.

Im pretty firm on the price. I think a new pair is around £350. Second hand ones going for £200-250, and tarnished ones like these perhaps a bit less. If I wanted another set of hats at any point, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t come close to these for £150.

Can be collected from near Colne, Lancs or will post for a fiver.

All the best!
