Burns-bass Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Hello! I have an NS Wav bass in my possession that i haven't actually played. It's a 3/4 scale and currently comes fitted with the standard strings. I need to increase my box practice, which I could conceivably do when the kids are asleep in bed on the Wav. BUT I don't want to spend the cash on new strings if it's not going to work. Does anyone have any experience? (I know no EUB will ever provide anything like the tactile and physical experience of playing a real DB, but bowing is too loud when the kids are in bed, so it's probably my only option.) 1 Quote
TorturedSaints Posted February 28 Posted February 28 I play my NS Wav three times a week with different concert bands (ease of transport, volume etc). As far as I know I have the original strings on it. It’s certainly possible to play arco, and I do, probably 75% of the time. I seem to have to use more Pops rosin than I do on the DB, but it works and doesn’t make an objectionable sound (well none of the conductors have complained yet). It’s a reasonable simulation of playing a DB, minus the vibration and the ability to move. If it’s a choice between practicing or not, then I say have a go and see what you think. Quote
ezbass Posted March 1 Posted March 1 From what I’ve read, the NS Trad strings are better for arco. In terms of pizz tone, there is a YT video of a comparison and I couldn’t hear any real difference between the 2 (it’s YT and possibly not the best reproduction) and the reviewer echoed that sentiment, although he did say there was some difference. The biggest difference between the 2 seems to be tension. Beyond that, you’re into proper doghouse strings and here I have no experience of different strings, only having played one. The only thing I am aware of is that if you want to use Spirocores on a WAV, you have to have 4/4 size, as they come up short if 3/4 are used (I think I got this snippet from Golihur). Quote

Thanks for this. I’ll give it a go when I get a chance. I feel really guilty having something so cool just left in the corner. Quote
