redfox Posted Saturday at 18:01 Posted Saturday at 18:01 Hello there. I don't know much but I really want to play bass in metal genre. My favorite bassist is Hara so I'd like the sound to be the closest to that. I want exactly not used 5 string passive bass. I've heard 5 string might be hard but I have an acoustic guitar I play everyday so I think it's not gonna be that bad. I've also read that HH can be turned into JJ with some wire manipulation but I'll 100% mess that up. I guess closest to Hara sound would be J-J so if anyone could suggest guitar (<360$) or maybe not that good guitar but upgradable to that level, I'd be really happy. Thank you in advance :] Also if there is no good guitar in such price tag (<360$) then I'd also like to know better options cause I really want it to sound nice for me to want to play it. (and please don't write something like "Try them out in the shop.", I'm here cause I can't). 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted Saturday at 18:26 Posted Saturday at 18:26 Squier Jazz 5? Jazz 5 a like... Harley Benton https://harleybenton.com/electric-basses/jb-models/ Sire? 2 Quote
Lozz196 Posted Saturday at 18:29 Posted Saturday at 18:29 For that sound yes, a Jazz bass of some sort would be best as that’s the bass being used. For the budget as Paul suggests Sire, Squier and Harley Benton all worth checking out. Quote
redfox Posted Saturday at 18:45 Author Posted Saturday at 18:45 The thing is I checked out ton of them and can't make my decision cause I only played acoustic so there is no electronics and those differences. I stopped at choosing between YAMAHA BB235 (PJ) and Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass V. But I appreciate your suggestions :] Only one thing I'd like to know is the sound of PJ would be comparable to the video I linked? Like would it be possible to achieve at least 90% same sound or should I just go with Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass V? Quote

The problem you're going to face is that video also has distortion, as well it being slapped - you'll probably struggle to make even her exact bass sound like the video without those things! I would go for the Squier, as it's a 5 string jazz, so whilst not the same as her Sadowsky, it's going to get you in the ball park Quote

I guess Squier Vibe is my primary goal then but I was also suggested IIBANEZ GSR205 with EMG 40 and I don't really know what EMG is but I'm not sure it's gonna be better then Squier Vibe. Thank you again :] Quote
SimonK Posted Saturday at 19:46 Posted Saturday at 19:46 +1 for the squire, although listening to that I would say playing ability (and hitting notes cleanly) will make a far bigger difference than the instrument you choose - indeed if you are starting out trying to play slap I would stick to a four string until you've been playing for a few years! 3 Quote

I also watched that review and guy in that says it's below average for the price tag and I don't really get it what's better when I couldn't find anything. Quote

Lobster said it's a solid bass, but the B string is below average - above average electronics with some not great build quality; unfortunately at that price range build quality tends to be a bit hit or miss from bass to bass Quote

If you are starting out the Squire will be fine - you are unlikely to notice much of a difference between instruments at this price point. The most important thing is to just get playing (and practicing). 3 Quote
redfox Posted Saturday at 20:20 Author Posted Saturday at 20:20 I see. So Squire it is then. Thank you all for the answers and suggestions, you helped a ton. Have a nice day :] 1 Quote
Bolo Posted Sunday at 09:20 Posted Sunday at 09:20 By all accounts Sire Marcus Miller are much less of a gamble quality wise than squire. Quote

(It's the name of a family business which Fender acquired.) 2 Quote

Autocorrect will adjust it to squire as you click post, from a mobile phone. 100% certain I spelled it correctly but there's no beating the stupidity of automation. 1 Quote

If it was that important to them, maybe they shouldn't write 'SquiEz' on their instruments. No wonder people get confused! 😉 1 Quote
