tauzero Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I was thinking about bidding on that but decided I'd got enough Seis. Looking at it, the top horn strap button is between frets 10 and 11, on the 6-string headed Sei Flamboyant (34" scale) on my left it's between 12 and 13 so there are slightly different proportions. I think the GH auction for the Alembic said that it was a 35" so there's no excuse for them not mentioning the double bass scale of the Sei. Come to think of it, you could try NS WAV-5 strings for it although they are ludicrously expensive. Quote
Burns-bass Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I do think it’s really off that they didn’t provide the scale length here. The descriptions can be quite brief. When you see stuff like “neck reset” it’s essential you check the guitar over. It’s a cool place and the vibe there is really good, but definitely know what you’re buying. Quote

Mokl Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Don't know if you've mentioned yet (sorry if I missed it)....but, how is the B string?! Quote

carlitos71 Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Incredible bass! What auction did buy it from? (Please share link if possible) Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I was curious what frequency low F# is. Google's AI got VERY confused, apparently F# is half a step below E. 2 Quote
Woodinblack Posted March 16 Author Posted March 16 ok, not that F# - the one above E Seems the AI is getting a little confused there! I think it might need heavier strings to get to E, although not much. I could turn it to a sub bass, E-C if I did that! 1 Quote

Bigwan Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I remember discussing this bass with somebody in the Gallery workshop (can't recall the chaps name, but it wasn't Martin) shortly after it was built. It was commissioned by a guy who was a helicopter pilot. He wanted the maximum string tension Martin could possibly give him. I'm sure there was more information imparted at the time but that's all I can recall. Quote

Stub Mandrel Posted March 16 Posted March 16 I trust this bass will come to the South West Bass Bash? I wanna go of it! 1 Quote
BigRedX Posted March 17 Posted March 17 That's even longer than the Knuckle Quake Bass (now Kalium) with a 39.5" scale. They might be able to make strings for this if Newtone can't. 1 Quote
Woodinblack Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 No it didn't, and having just concluded my search for a long gig bag I could get the bongo in, I find myself back in that position. I might just end up getting an 88 key keyboard case, as that would fit it 1 Quote
itu Posted March 17 Posted March 17 (edited) There has been this guy here that builds very long scale basses. Which strings he uses? (He may have been to notreble?) Edit: I did not mean this, but Newtone was mentioned: https://www.notreble.com/buzz/2023/01/23/bass-of-the-week-lignum-sub-octave-bass/ Edited March 17 by itu no treble 1 Quote
Hellzero Posted March 17 Posted March 17 Interesting @itu. That said my Noguera Yves Carbonne 8 (non octave) strings fretless was originally meant to be played in this sub octave tuning with a 34 inches scale and it worked flawlessly, the low E0 is a 0.185 string with, from what I can see in the talented Nate Navarro video, a tighter low E0. Check out Yves Carbonne work to hear the sound of this bass. 😉 1 Quote
Woodinblack Posted March 17 Author Posted March 17 Ooh 170, that is a big chap, not sure what is on there at the moment, but it seemed to handle quite a bit lower before it got too flappy. I am not sure why it needs to be so big when you have a scale like this, but he must know what he was doing. Not sure a 170 would fit through the bridge Quote
