Described as a Fender Bass at £2,000 I have asked if it is a 1970’s reissue or a 1970’s bass and he did not know but he did confirm that the truss rod nut is on the headstock - I thought they are always on the heel end? Can they be on the headstock for this era?

I have asked for the serial number but my initial thoughts are that it may not be genuine?

As I understand it all 70s precisions have the truss rod adjustment at the heel, the jazz had the bullet at the headstock, I haven’t got FB but it did let me see the picture briefly, hasn’t that one got 21 frets?

He didn’t know….. 😆

That might have been a little ambiguous ….

What I should have said is that a seller asking £2k for a bass should have some idea what it is, and that irrespective of anything else, that he doesn’t know would be the deal breaker for me 👍

Thanks and yes you are right - 21 frets and I guess it should have 20!

Yeah, it just looks wrong to me, I’d steer clear myself

As above.... looks a bit wrong.  Wrong string-tree, the late 70s decal looks a bit out of place, 21 frets and the angle of the top straight edge by the E tuner where it slopes down to the neck and nut looks too 'pointy'.  Truss rod adjustment should be at the heel and even if that was just the truss rod 'plug' at the headstock end that had been gouged a bit, it wouldn't have one on a rosewood fretboard neck.

Not too far from me so may drop him a line and go and have a look anyway..... even if it's just to break some bad news.

He has provided me with a serial number that points to 1979-1981 but when I pointed out the truss rod nut and frets discrepancies he said he can’t comment. Reckons he took it to a music shop for a ball park figure. Hmmmm…….

The serial number for a 79 would be on the headstock starting S9 , but it doesn’t look the right shape to me for a fender, I’m guessing the decal has been added

It has neck adjustment at the headstock … 99% certain that’s only ever been a jazz thing

How the f*** did I not spot that ? Dead giveaway to an AliExpress neck

21 frets with no dot on 21, bet it’s an overhang

Will she be doing the supplies at the next Scotland bass bash?

I'm sure if we have a whip round she will!
