I quite like the fact that production models usually require a bit of personalisation to suit as it makes them unique to me. I absolutely love my Hofner Verythin long scale bass but they missed a trick not putting white binding around the F-holes so I had that added to mine. It makes them pop out a little more. The original volume / tone buttons were a hideous orange so I changed them and I added the racing stripe. On balance the modifications were inexpensive and I have a truly one of a kind bass.

My favourite bass at the moment is my Orange O bass. It could have less neck dive, so hipshot lightweight tuners are on my list.

And though I won´t let my 34` go, I would love to add a short scale one. (Anyone here who has influence on Mr Emsley ????)

Other than the bridge / saddle / mute of the "original" 4001 / 4003, and the twin truss rod malarky, as have been mentioned elsewhere, something else that could do with changing is the height adjustment of the neck pickup.

The scratchplate is a thick piece of plastic, so the neck pickup can't physically be set more very high, even if you take the springs off (I have). It'd just make it a bit easier resting my thumb on it.

And you can see the words "I agree to them being outlawed?" I was agreeing to the overall sentiment of not being a fan of relicing. The outlaw reference was clearly meant in a non-literal sense just to illustrate the point. And it's me that needs to keep up huh?

I’m not a traditionalist at all, but if it was my decision, all pots would either

a. follow the curvature of the lower bout (e.g. Stingray)

or

b. be mounted in a straight line parallel to the strings (e.g. Thunderbird).

No exceptions. I’ll buy a Wal and a Spector each when I can get them without controls in that ridiculous diamond shape, and two Laklands when they get their stuff in order, thank you very much.

Also, the right amount of pots is three.

Quoting myself because I just came across a Fodera. I‘m sure they play wonderfully - but can anyone explain the reasoning behind their control layouts to me? It just looks superduper crowded and fiddly to me.
