SICbass Posted Monday at 09:21 Posted Monday at 09:21 Hello to upright players, I have a technique question about rockabilly slap. It's regarding bars 34-37 In the attatched pdf in the solo in That's Alright Mama. The solo section as a whole, I would play a slightly different line, but putting that aside, on the 5-chord E, if I try and play it on the D and G strings, I struggle to control sympathetic resonance of the open, un-played E string. So, do I: a.) somehow dampen the open E? b.) focus on my right hand technique when striking the D and G strings? c.) play the line higher up on the A and D stings? Your thoughts, please? Cheers, Paul Quote
Geek99 Posted Monday at 14:06 Posted Monday at 14:06 Just use your nails a bit more and don’t bother with the slap (unless a guitard is in range of course) I was experimenting with it whilst playing INXS last night Quote
SICbass Posted yesterday at 13:53 Author Posted yesterday at 13:53 Oops, sorry. Thanks for pointing that out. 4.) ThatsAlrightMama copy.pdf Quote

Use more nail on a double bass? I do always practice slapping guitar players at any opportunity 😎 Quote
Beedster Posted 23 hours ago Posted 23 hours ago Without wishing to offend anyone, here's my advice re Rockabilly Slap Just don't, or at least, if you do, 20 seconds max per set Quote

To be honest, it's as a just-in-case, if the Elvis in our Rock'n'Roll show insists on having it á la original. I'm risking a stress injury in my right hand as it is... Quote

I'm risking a stress injury in my right hand as it is... I was in a band with a guy like that, middle if gig ‘Slap that bass Mr Bassman’. He got a look of complete indifference as I continued to play pizz as I had the whole gig. I didn’t offer my services again. All joking aside that, you’re not wrong mentioning risk of injury in picking up a new technique, anything from blisters to tendinitis, quite minor unless you’re an upright player 👍 1 Quote
