NAD: GK Legacy 800. How do you run yours?

I seem to have selective amplifier constipation.....I can't pass GKs.

So another one arrived yesterday. I first heard one of these at the North West Bass Bash last year when @GreeneKing brought his along. I think everyone was quietly impressed by it, I certainly was. Anyway, one popped up on Facebook Marketplace, but it was a long way away and the seller was unknown to me. I messaged him and explained that I was reluctant to buy sight unseen on Marketplace, and he offered to list it on Ebay instead to provide more security. So here it is.

It's intended as the beginnings of a smaller rig, smaller than my BF 3x10 and vintage racked RBs, but also as a backup on bigger gigs when I'm using the big rig. It will replace my Elf as backup too.

I've seen and understood what Bob Gallien says when he explains how things work, and that the EQ and Overdrive circuit are based on the old RB heads. But if anyone here has/had one, I'd be interested to know how you used it, particularly the Overdrive circuit, to get a similar tone and feel to the old RB heads.

Cheers,

Rob

I run mine pretty much flat but dial back/cut the treble a tad as it's a very bright head. Then I may engage the bump for a touch more low end if required. Alternatively, experiment with boosting the low mid to e.g. 2pm and bass to e.g. 1pm and see which you prefer.

I don't really use the overdrive but if I do I keep it very low for just a little growl and then use the edge to control how bright it sounds.

It's a great amp with tons of power through an efficient 8ohm or 4 ohm cab. Cabs colour amps as well so I find that it sounds full, punchy and tight through my Genz 2x12 4ohm cab, and clear, punchy and more piano-tone-like through my LFSys Monaco 8ohm 1x12 cab. I have to dial the treble right back with the latter cab!

Play around with it, try the switches and then disengage them and try adjusting the EQ in a similar fashion.... see which you prefer. It's a very responsive head! Enjoy!

The last good head I had from GK was the MB-800. Should never have moved it on. Even the MB-800 Fusion didn't sound as good. So, I tried "all" of the new GK line. 800 and 1200. Legacy and fusion. Did not get along. Tried a Mesa Subway D-800+. Sold every GK component I had. Switched to Mesa Subway. Cabs and all. Never been happier. With an amp. These days I try to live in the 21st century and run amp less. But I'll keep a couple of Mesa stacks. Should I need them. YMMV.

So, that didn't answer the original question at all. 🤔🫤
