FugaziBomb Posted Friday at 13:16 Posted Friday at 13:16 Hello! I've been an on-and-off TB'r for a few years, but the mods have finally left a bad enough taste in my mouth for me to give up on it. On a thread about "Best Pedals for Ultimate Clean Tone," I posted a picture of an empty pedal board as a joke. That was deemed offensive enough to warrant deleting my post on the grounds that I was insinuating bassists shouldn't use effects. The ironic part is that I myself have a large pedal board full of effects. Anyway, rant over. Here I am. Also, the challenge question on sign up felt like a trick question. Mr. Fender's first name was Clarence, not Leo. 3 14 Quote
RonC Posted Friday at 13:39 Posted Friday at 13:39 That was a damn good Joke!!! 🤣 Shame that they find this offensive..... 1 1 1 Quote
ezbass Posted Friday at 13:43 Posted Friday at 13:43 A fine piece of humour IMO, but maybe humour doesn’t travel well, or that receptor is removed for some TB mods. Anyway… 1 Quote
SpondonBassed Posted Friday at 14:48 Posted Friday at 14:48 Welcome Fugazi. You're not the first new member I've heard saying something similar. I sure you won't be the last. We thrive on humour here. We have to. If we didn't laugh about the way things are today we'd have to cry instead. Who has time for that? Enjoy. 4 Quote
Sean Posted Friday at 15:19 Posted Friday at 15:19 Welcome to Basschat. I’m in my 18th year of it and if I’d spent that time practising instead of chatting, I’d still be mediocre on a good day. I haven’t been on there since Chef passed away in 2021. He was a mod and always very helpful (in a very direct way) with Mesa and G&L related issues. Quote

I'm not sure how often the moderation team turns around, but it's always felt like they were very censorial over trivial stuff. I had another strike against me when I replied to the thread "Does the bass player from Korn use all 5 strings?" By saying "He barely uses the fretboard." They have very little tolerance for acerbic humor over there. 8 Quote

You’ll fit in beautifully but the pressure is on you now to maintain that level of wit and repartee 😃 1 4 Quote

I was asked to be a Mod over there a few years ago, but to me being a Mod and a Commercial User at the same time would have been completely daft. And everyone knows that Clarence Fedner was too cheap to fix his original misspelled logo decals, so he just went with it. Edited Friday at 17:15 by Passinwind 1 2 Quote
prowla Posted Friday at 17:45 Posted Friday at 17:45 Some time last year they updated the platform to something which decided my PC browser was supposed to look like a phone. I did comment a couple of times that there was loads of frippery and wasted space per page, but I think it fell on deaf ears. I haven't been there for a while. Quote

Likewise Sean, I joined Basschat (or whatever it was called then) in around 2005, still can't play the bass but f*** me I've bought some lovely ones here 3 Quote

I joined here only a few years ago but if I wasn't in Mexico I'd have bought many more lovely basses than I already have from here (and I'd have been looking at flights to Germany for that lovely pair of Deusenbergs that came up yesterday) So at least if @FugaziBomb you are in the States the wallet will be relatively safe! 1 Quote
ahpook Posted Friday at 20:35 Posted Friday at 20:35 Always worth taking a break from any online environment IMHO. It's easy to forget they're not real life. 2 Quote

I think that's really good advice. I've had a few breaks from BC over the years. It changes and evolves over time, like anything. If you're ever in the UK when There's a basschat event on it's worth attending. I intend to do the South West, and if it goes ahead, the South East bashes this year. 1 Quote

joel406 Posted Saturday at 22:21 Posted Saturday at 22:21 I got banned for relating an experience I had with a backline. I was just telling about my experience, and they took offence relating how weak the amp was they provided for the bass. A Hartke 810 hydrive with their 600 class D head. I forget the model. The new one. No power. Barely audible. All the while I was thinking I had my Mesa Subway 212 and a D-800+ right outside in the car. And how it would blow this away. Blew their cogs. 1 Quote

diskwave Posted yesterday at 08:49 Posted yesterday at 08:49 I go on there extolling the virtues of my CV 70 P bass, it causes quite a bit of upset. Americans are so brand loyal its ridiculous... and their humour isnt grt either. Quote
chris_b Posted yesterday at 14:17 Posted yesterday at 14:17 I've seen this a few times and it's disappointing that people don't always have a positive experience on Talkbass. I joined TB in 2007. Most stuff I post is prefaced with IMO or IME, and while I’ve had disagreements I've not seen any serious push back on any opinions I've expressed. I've found TB to be a great bass resource. Sorry that's not everyone's experience. 1 Quote

I've found TB to be a great bass resource. Sorry that's not everyone's experience. TB users are weirdly confrontational. A lot of users go out of their way to disagree with each other about trivial things. I once commented that the site felt like it should be called "TalkSemantics.com" instead. My current rig is biamped to run clean lows and only effects on the mids/highs. When I was planning out the rig, I posted a few times looking for specific info on biamping only to literally be called an idiot for wanting to do that. I did it anyway and after a few years really perfected the art. Recently I responded to another thread about biamping, saying that one trick I use is to have both of my low and high sides overlap at 100hz instead of using a traditional crossover. This user responded that I was apparently doing it wrong. When I responded back that it works well for me, he shot back with a multi paragraph manifesto about how that couldn't possibly sound good. Meanwhile I've been doing that for years and it sounds great! Like I said, talk bass is weird. Everyone seems like they're itching for a fight. 1 Quote

There's definitely a humerus vibe to Basschat (see what I did there), I was going to say it's possibly due to the British humour, but realised that we have people from all around the world who seem to think the same way. I suspect that if you don't take yourself too seriously for the stuff that doesn't need to be and be sensible on the stuff that does need to sensible on , you'll fit right in. I think your empty pedalboard is a great joke and only miserable gits would think otherwise. People do sometimes blow up with each other, but we seem to survive. Get involved and tell us all about the biamping. I'd love to know what you are doing and why it works for you. I was thinking of using my Ampeg combo and a Yahama HS7 speaker to do something similar just to see what it sounds like. I've got the kit so why not try it and see if it works. There's definitely an experimental culture here, from building your own guitars, building your own pedals, speaker and so on. Not sure anybody has made their own strings but I could be wrong. It's also nice that we have people who have an awful lot of knowledge on their specialised subjects, be it old Fenders, building stuff, mending stuff, IT or how to do something. Certainly the build diaries have some fabulous work listed, absolutely top class builders. Not been to New Hampshire for a very long time (30+ years) when I worked in DC and travelled a bit around the east coast. Lovely, actually gorgeous, in spring and autumn. Anyway, welcome to Basschat.
