SimonK Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) The back history is on the thread linked below. Basically I've been buying super cheap TE cabs and trying to repair them. I needed some genuine TE Celestion speakers for repairing two classic TE cabs, so picked up one of the newer Peavey made cabs for not a lot (£90) as a source of speakers. So with an empty cab, rather than chucking it, I thought I would turn it into maybe some drawers or a cabinet especially as the design had a split grill making it ideal for maybe two drawers... SimonK Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Here it is from last weekend (top - a 1048H) with the much cooler 1015H "stack in a box" that I needed two of the 10s for (the other two are destined for a 2103x which is probably the most sought after of old TE cabs): Quote
SimonK Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 ...and today was all about realising that I need the right tools for the job - namely an oscillating multi-tool that can cut out the bracing inside. My mini circular saw did OK getting the outer bits off but seems I will need to borrow something to get the rest out: 1 Quote
SpondonBassed Posted March 30 Posted March 30 I'm oscillating with excitement. (Shhh! Nobody tell Henry Cole about this or he'll start buying up the rest of the unwanted cabs for his "upcycling" TV program.) Quote

SimonK Posted March 31 Author Posted March 31 Get the right tool for the job and everything happens much quicker! Had to stop because of the neighbours, but tomorrow I will get the last bit of bracing out, then do some surgical cutting to try to get some straight lines again. Then it will be sanding and spray painting to hide the scuffs and cuts in the tolex. I'm keeping the central bit and the tweeter for looks. 1 Quote

Funny you said that - I was thinking of ordering some Kawasaki 777 to spray the inside rather than black... apparently that's what they used originally... 1 Quote

Great - thanks - this one little sentence has now completely derailed my plans. OF COURSE this is Trace Elliot so OF COURSE I need to now build in a black light and fluorescent lime green paint - the big question is how to do it... Any ideas would be welcome, but my current thought is to buy two kitchen drawers, mount the two grills onto boards, and then use the grill/board combination as the front of each drawer. I think if I put a spacer between the grill and the board, paint the board lime green, and then mount a black light on the middle support, I will be able to get a green glow through the grills while allowing each drawer to open/close freely without getting tangled... 1 Quote

SimonK Posted Sunday at 12:39 Author Posted Sunday at 12:39 After cutting out most of the bracing fitted some support for the two drawers to attach and sanded everything down. Now ready to spray! 2 Quote
SimonK Posted Monday at 13:03 Author Posted Monday at 13:03 ..and lots more progress this morning thanks to the black spray paint drying really quickly. Also managed to get the first coat of a fluorescent lime green paint on ready for the black light which I have just ordered, and fitted the runners... 4 Quote
SimonK Posted Monday at 17:00 Author Posted Monday at 17:00 (edited) ...and as it was a rainy afternoon got the drawers done. Not my best piece of woodwork - I may end up re-doing the drawers as while they do work there are a lot of rough edges. Also ended up riveting the bottom and back sections to the sides as screws were not working in the HDF. Also not happy with the lime green paint so have bought some fluorescent tape instead. Now just waiting for the tape and of course the black light to turn up... Edited Monday at 17:00 by SimonK 12 1 Quote
SimonK Posted 10 hours ago Author Posted 10 hours ago ....and that's the project done (decided I could live with the wonky drawers)! Probably make a nice home for random pedals and leads - I'm actually tempted to take it with me to gigs as a way of storing things coz it looks so cool! 7 Quote
