This. Pickups are the electric guitar/bass world's equivalent of hi-fi's magic cables.

Toltec pickups from Leeds. They're from Laverack guitars. Lee is very helpful and makes a cracking pickup at very competitive prices. His J and P pickups are fantastic.

Bloodstone Guitarworks

Herrick Pickups.

Fletcher Pickups.

Armstrong Pickups.

Fife Pickups.

There's also a lad called Martin Harmer, I've an alnico 2 spilt coil from him along with a 51 alnico 2 single coil and a pair of 51 singles for a Tele jazz bass. For the latter Martin cut me custom bobbins to match my string spacing at neck/bridge positions, wound the bridge pickup hotter (to hold it's own against the neck position) and RWRP for hum-cancelling.

Turnaround for the pair was 1 week and they were under £100 with postage.

That's cracking value and similar to Toltec. I was quoted more than double that (£240) for a pair with customisation from a well-known UK maker. I needed 2 pairs of Js made up as humbuckers and it's the difference between £200 and £480 for total job of 4 coils. And because I'm familiar with Toltec and not with the other more expensive one, it's a no-brainer.

Mods, can can we get a sticky to collect the info from here and add other pickup makers in the uk ?

If we're expanding the list to the rest of Europe, it'll get lengthy 😀

There's Hepcat over in France, Heaussel in Germany and Lundgren in Sweden. Spain had Jess Loueiro but I'm nit sure if he's still trading.

Reckon I can add a few more when on lunch time break 👍

Oh, god, here we go.

Honestly, just put anything in there.  You don't need to spend nearly £400 on pickups, even if they were hand wound by virgins in the mountains of Tibet and potted in wax from bees that produce manuka honey.

Buy some Warmans.  £20.  Tonally you won't hear any difference.  You'll want to hear difference, you'll believe you hear a difference, but there won't be any difference.

True dat. When I built my bitsa P, I intended to string it with knackered La Bellas and go for the Jamerson sound, Decided on the standard Seymour Duncan P pickup at about £40. For nearly three times the price, I could have bought the SD Antquity. The spec's were identical for both. The Antquity just came with worn looking plastic covers. Sounds just as I wanted it to.

Being a DC Tribute player myself, I'd be interested in knowing how different the upgrade sounded on yours. What strings are you using?

I'm using Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Short Scale 45-105 strings on both.

The Tone rider pickup gives me more of a jazz type sound (bit brighter than a P bass), but the Armstrong pickup is a lot deeper, with more thump.  The body on the darker bass is thicker and heavier than the lighter one as well, which will undoubtedly add to the difference.....
